I was offered a Python today. Stainless steel 4".

It is his shooter. Nice shape. Rubber grips. No box or papers.

Double action pull seem shorter than a Smith. Single action trigger is best I have ever felt.

I have my 12.6 What is a fair price?

I'm thinking $800-1K. You'll get other Python collectors (who have lots of 4"ers) tell you it worth $1500 easily.

If it was blue I assume it would be worth more? I like the old Colt blue.

Depends on the beholder, some guys prefer that mirror like nickel finish, although I didn't particularly care for it. If the gun is mechanically sound and everything locks up tight, the chambers index correctly, and if the seam between the crane and the frame kinda disappears when the cylinder is closed, then I think $1K is an very attractive price.

I would love a stainless python! I would say either buy it or you pm me the name of the person selling it if you don't want it. I am not too sure what the price would be. The prices for pythons are astronomical any more. The blued ones are nice, but I always prefer SS myself.

I had a Ultimate Stainless, it was "nice"... but the fit/finish was not as nice as my dad's early 60's Royal Blue.
- I'm always surprised by the $ paid for some of the 12(6) guns considering the limited market.

Then again, it's only $ and nobody is getting any younger...

I had a 60s vintage Royal Blue 6" Python once. Sold it to Alan Lever to buy my first parachute. Best finished gun ever! But - very tight bore and chambers. Rounds that would chamber in a S&W .357 were very tight in the Python.

In the end, something is worth what someone will pay for it. The only reason prices are sky high is because people are willing to pay a lot for a gun few will shoot much, if at all.

It is not a polished bright SS.

I have not bought it yet. Trying to get a handle on the fair price.

A collector gun is very lightly used. This was the guys shooter. Hogue rubber grip. No box or papers. Prohib.

What is fair price?

As you discribe it, I really think 800 is fair. It is not in collector shape and has rubber grips. There is a convenience factor for the seller offering it to you (not pay shop commission or finding buyer himself etc) and he will still come out with good money.

If the gun is stainless rather than Royal Blue or nickel plated, its slightly less valuable, or would be to me. $800 sounds like a fair price for both parties provided the gun is sound.

There is a fella on GunNutz that works on them...... Let me do some looking, I bought a python off him but forget his name.

Found him..... johnnyjellybean

Good to know. Not that I shoot mine enough that it will ever need maintenance. I'm too scared to scratch it or wear it out!

The biggest problem with the prohib Pythons is that unlike, for example, a prohib 686 there is virtually zero chance you could ever find a barrel to convert it to restricted so it's always going to be prohibited. I've passed on several prohib Pythons in the $1200-1500 range as I just can justify that kind of money for a gun the is eventually going to confiscate for nothing. Given this fact & the stated condition I think $1000 is fair for both parties. Personal preferences obviously vary but SS guns are consistently listed for more than blued versions.
