Hows the grouse count this year in your area?

Very few grouse this fall in my area. Haven't hunted them for quite some time now because of this. Hoping they will make a come back.
No shortage of turkeys though!!!!!!

Looking beaut in the pan... --- before and after pics?

I got 6 spruce so far ( 3 short trips ) and missed about 2 dozen all season that I spooked. Only seen 3 ruffled.... Missed them all. This is only my second year hunting so I kinda suck.

our house cleaner is coming today, gotta get out of her way for 4 hrs, so I'll take my best pal and go grouse hunting. It will take the full 4 hrs to go where we're going today. Hope to bag 3 or 4 for a week end meal, looking for the white meat ones, perhaps Sharptails. Not sure which is the best way to cook them so they don't dry out. Don't really care for a soup or stew type of dish. Got any ideas?

I roast mine wrapped in bacon and serve them with a dish of hot melted garlic butter.....

Always soak mine overnight in salt water. Used to use milk but it got too expensive.

Grilled Grouse Cordon Bleu.

Directions for: Grilled Chicken Cordon Bleu
INGREDIENTS
4 chicken boneless, skinless breasts, pounded thin

Olive oil

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

½ lb(s) triple creme cheese (recommended: Red Hawk) or Brie, thinly sliced

2 lemons, halved

8 slices prosciutto, paper thin

ÂĽ lb(s) baby arugula

DIRECTIONS
1. Heat the grill to high.

2. Brush the chicken on both sides with oil and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Grill until slightly charred on both sides and just cooked through, about 2 minutes per side. Put a few slices of cheese on each breast, close the cover and let it melt slightly, about 40 seconds. Brush the cut side of lemons with oil and grill, cut side down until golden brown and slightly charred, about 45 seconds.

3. Put the chicken on large serving plates, top each breast with 2 slices of prosciutto and some arugula. Squeeze the grilled lemon on top and drizzle with olive oil.

I counted around 35 in a day before the snow hit, 9 were clear enough shots for the .22. They were definitely a lot more skiddish this year. Two days later the snow hit and the count dropped down to 12, taking home another 5. Some were flushing when we got within 75 yards of them.

Went out opening wkd here in MB with my 9yo son. Hit up Sandilands by Marchand. Only spotted one grouse and ran into yogi, who quickly high tailed it the other way.
Last two wkds while mtn biking we spotted alot in RMNP though. "Should've brought a slingshot" was my son's reaction.

well, after 4 hrs in the bush, only 1 grouse was spotted, it slowly walked off the trail into the foliage and disappeared! So, my best pal and I came home empty handed! Oh well, next time, I guess!

Well they don't just disappear although sometimes it seems that way. You must learn to think like that bird if you want to find him. His 1st instinct will be to get out of sight and the heaviest cover will often be right at the edge of the trail. If you walked right up to where you saw him disappear and then in that could immediately cause him to flush back into the bush if he sat right there. I will assume that didn't happen in this case because you didn't mention him flying, so here's the 3 most likely places that he went. Remember, he's trying to get away from you, so what often happens is that once inside the heavy edge cover, he will turn and walk or run parallel to the trail away from you. So while you are looking for him deeper in the bush, he is still right beside the trail but farther up. Another thing that will often happen is that he will do what I just described and as soon as you enter the bush he will run out the other side, across the trail, and he will now be on the other side of the trail from you. The 3rd thing that can happen is that though walking slow off the trail, once out of sight they can run like mad to some thick patch of cover and hide. So what I suggest you try is go into the bush 15 or 20 yards before where you saw the bird disappear. Move as stealthily as you can because wherever that bird went, he is probably ready to fly. Look back towards the trail at the edge cover and look well beyond where you saw him disappear. Also look for thick patches inside the bush in the vicinity. Stand still with your gun ready to mount and only move your head as you look for the bird. He is probably already nervous and may bob his head around looking to see where you went or may be trying to sneak through the cover. If you don't see him stealthily move forward parallel to the trail while looking in every direction to see through gaps in the cover. If you have advanced well past where the bird went in then circle back deeper into the bush to your starting point and cross the trail and do the same all over again.
