only experience with a 300wsm was an Abolt II, 23 inch tube I believe.. I didn't like the recoil, kikeez pad helped but still a lively round IMO in a lightweight rifle.

I have an A-Bolt in 300 wsm with a 23" barrel. I can usually match velocities shown in reloading manuals. Muzzle blast is no worse than any other rifle I own.
Yes, in a light rifle like the A-Bolt the rifle can bite you if you don't pay attention when shooting it.

Have a bit of range time with a T3 Lite in 300 WSM. Definitely needed a Limbsaver recoil pad, fairly sharp bite to it. I don't think 22.5" barrel will affect ballistics in any way that a deer, elk or moose would notice. Nor do I think one would notice the difference in muzzle blast.
Keep in mind, recoil can be significantly reduced with lighter bullets, in this case going with 150 gr instead of 180s. With quality bullets, bonded or monolithic, will get the job done just fine on N.American critters, save perhaps for stopping an oncoming griz.

Yep, I was a younger lad, less experienced say, and traded it for a 308 win T3 , happy days there .. would now days - later on go for a 270 wsm though! I think it would be excellent long range mountain gun with the pad on in say a rem 700
I picked up a 300wsm that was a bad shooter cut it from 22" to 19". Went from a shotgun pattern to a descent shooter. Never noticed a difference in muzzel blast, maybe if you had a sound meter. The before and after fps loss of the 150/180 factory and 4 hand loads averaged under 50fps. 760 Winchester only lost 18fps but was the slowest I tried.
