Hey yall just finished building my dmr with a 20" ballistics advantage barrel. Looking to see what type of scope to mount on. I got a aimpoint pro. A burris 332 3x dot. But not up to the range I'm looking for. What do you guys have on your dmr for the longer ranges or what is your set up? Thanks

Your max distances will help decide how much magnification you need/want. Out to 600 yards, I use a 4-20x optic. You can use less but I wouldn't go below 10x. Lots of guys use lower power scopes but if more is an option, why not take advantage of it. There are some good choices below $500 that will get you a decent 4-16x scope. Look at Bushnell, Vortex and Sightron. There will always be better scopes in higher price brackets but with $500 you will find something very useful. The one I've been using this year is the Sightron STAC 4-20x. Cost is around $800 and haven't seen the need for anything more than that functionally and optically for my needs. Another solid option is a fixed 10x Bushnell Elite Tactical LRS 10x 40mm Mil Dot scope. I have one and its great. No zoom so is a problem at closer ranges but 100 yards out to 400 should be perfect. Shopping around will get you a good deal. I bought mine for less than $300.

Thanks man. Ya I have a few 6-24 and I thought that was too much for this. I do have a burris 4.5 to 14 fullfield. Maybe I'll try that. Do you recommend mount or rings?

As long as the image quality is good, you can never have too much magnification (provided you aren't too shaky). Sounds like you have what you need. either one of the scopes you mentioned is good. Mounts or rings doesn't matter as long as they are solid. I use mounts on an AR and rings on a bolt. Because the mounts need a full rail vs rings that can adapt to the bolt actions without rails. If you have a good set of rings, I'd use that. Good mounts are very expensive.

Isn't DMR scope something like ACOG and Elcan Spectre? Fixed/dual magnification, wide field of view?

DMR typically shoot intermediate distances between 200-600 meters. You can be effective with ACOG/Spectre in the shorter end but I'd use them more for CQB 25 to 300 meters. CF soldiers use them all the way to 600m but I'd rather have more than 4x magnification.

Might be right out to lunch, but the Vortex Strike Eagle is 1-6x, has a BDC reticle and is roughly in that price range, although adding rings/mount will put the cost over the top. Don't know if you consider 6x enough zoom though.

Specify your range, it'll help suggest appropriate optics. Given your price range though, I'd be sticking to the lower side of magnification. Your budget isn't exactly monstrous, so the last thing you want to be doing is going for something with a huge amount of magnification, and sacrificing picture quality and tracking. I'd much rather see my gong clearly albeit small than have it take up half my reticle, be unclear and fail to track when I change ranges. I shot my 1-6 razor out to 600m without having any issues seeing the target, having something that was 16-20x would have just forced me to sacrifice on those days I chose to shoot much closer.

I think the max magnification would be around 14X given limitations of cartridge AND mirage (so, a 4 x 14 x 40 would give a great range of magnification)
A rough and tumble DMR would benefit from a physically smaller scope to avoid dings/optics damage---so a 1x6, 1X8, 3x9 if one can be found in your price range.
Good luck!
