This morning two friends joined myself and the pup for a pheasant hunt. The pup did great again, maintaining his steep learning curve, and our shooting was up to par, so we brought home our limits again. The only negative , was being sprayed with shot in the parking lot when someone decided that it was a good idea to shoot directly down the road at us and several vehicles.

Well done! I'm jealous (about the hunting part!). Still gotta wait until Saturday before I can get my pup afield in Nova Scotia.
Cheers,
Dave

I am out with the pup at least three times every week, sometimes on my own , sometimes with friends, and myself and the pup always enjoy ourselves. The 20th pheasant was killed over the pup yesterday, and he gets better with every trip.

A very foggy morning, but few hunters, and plenty of birds. One solid point in the timber just after arriving, and we had our first bird. The second point in the timber didn't present a shot, the bird flushed where it was so thick, that swinging the gun was just not possible. The third point occurred in the long grass after the pup and the bird played hide and seek for a few minutes. This point resulted in the 50th pheasant over the pup, and it had the longest tail of any this year, with 38 bars on the longest feather.

Nice pictures and stories fellas. Brings back many fond memories of pheasant hunts on Pelee Island and Scugog when I had my labs. We did about 20 years straight on Pelee. I always enjoyed watching the dogs work, they were truly in there element. I allways said it was the dogs hunt, my job was to drive them down and make sure they had a good time and got back safe.

It looks like your dog is a griffon,,,,,,,or iis a GWP? Not much of your pup showing in the original photo. What kennel did you get it from if you don't mind me asking? I'm in the process right now of contacting kennels because I'm looking for a good breeder to get myself a griffon.

He is a Drahthaar, and I can't recommend Vom Slaney Vale highly enough. I have been in contact with two of Butch's litter mates in the USA, and they are also extremely pleased with the progress of their pups. These pups all have great personalities, and they all love to hunt.

Is the Drathaar the correct name for a German Wirehaired Pointer or is that an entirely different breed of dog? They definitely look similar. Sounds like your dog is a winner!

If both parents were registered in the German VDD system, and both have met the necessary requirements, the pup can be registered in the VDD system as a drahthaar. If the parents are registered in the North American system as GWPs , then the pup will be a GWP. A drahthaar can be registered as a GWP as well, as I did with my pup, so he can take part in the NAVHDA tests. A GWP can't be registered as a drahthaar. Basically, the VDD is a much smaller group, and the bloodlines are more closely monitored from what I have seen.

Thanks for the info on that! I think I'm going to get a griffon because they're a little smaller,,,maybe ten pounds or so. I want to get a female (usually about 50 lbs.). From all the research I've been doing of late both these breeds are top notch! How much will your boy tip the scales at once he is fulling mature?

Most males top out at between 60 and 70lbs,but my pup is larger than normal. He is 75lbs now, and he could easily reach 80lbs.
