Shooting RPR 6.5 Creedmoor.
Would like to shoot MOA at 1000 yds (Assume I have the skill and knowledge, my question is about finding the best value optics)
I'd like to spend $400 or less.
Did I just ask for a Unicorn for Christmas or is there something that would fit my budget on this?

I've bought a Rio Rand from Amazon for $68, just for goofing around and shooting at 100 yds (4-24) but I'm fairly certain that isn't going to get the job done, so starting to information gather now.

Thanks in advance for your input on this!

Unless you come across someone that's in desperate need of cash... hard to find... you not only have to SEE 1,000 but you have to have repeatable / dependable adjustment so you're not guessing

A $1200-1300 RPR does not deserve a $68 amazon scope . Ive been using a Nikon P-308 for my savage 10 , good glass and scope for $300ish . My friend is using a bushnell elite 10x40 for his 6.5 with good success. They are $250-300.

Google Tiborasaurus Rex and find his YouTube videos parts 21 and 22 on scope selection. He rates scopes at various price ranges. He really likes the SFWA Super Sniper - these come up used on the EE here occasionally and I gather that they are now exporting to Canada.

Like others have said, fixed power scopes from Bushmell and Leopold are also worth looking at...

*Edit* the SWFA scopes are not being imported into Canada. At least they do not have a distributor.... Any that are seen on the EE I will bet are either Grey Market (smuggled across) or were imported under a 1 time export license. Which would have required an export permit and an end user certificate.

The least expensive scope that T-Rex recommend, that is available on the Canadian market was a Falcon Menace.

As I was just getting into shooting things at more than 3-400y and in the market for a target style scope with a ranging reticle, and being a good "follower" I ran out and purchased a 6-24x50 with a FFP recital. Mil/Mil. Frontier firearms is where I purchased mine. Iirc a bargain at $1000

It's a British brand, made in China.

The glass is not what I would consider great. I would class it as "barely adequate".

It only carries a 3yr warranty.

The (I believe) most important feature when choosing a long range capable scope is the repeatability of the turrets.

You need to know when you dial in 4.3 Mil of elevation that you are actually getting 4.3 Mil of elevation.

I have had mine for 3-4 years. I've put close to 1000 rounds through rifles the scope was mounted to a R-700 243 AI and a 308 10TR. It's currently mounted to the 10TR.

I have now done enough shooting at "long-ish" range to know this scopes limitations. I believe it's a great starter scope, but a scope that will be upgraded from in the future. I have been thinking of upgrading myself the last little bit.

I recently purchased a Bushnell Elite Tactical scope 4-12x44. FFP Mil/Mil. Made in Japan. The 12x is a touch light for 1000y, but it is fantastic at 800y. The turrets are reputable and perfectly matched my dope for come-ups. A very nice option at $1200. The only downside is the magnification. It is great at medium ranges (0-800y) but not what I would consider a Long Range scope. A 6-24x50 model is available. But at $1800 a fair bit pricier.

I also have a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 EBR-2. It has fantastic glass. The best of the 3. The turrets are just a bit off. I find I always need about 5-7-10% more elevation than I'm supposed to... which I find really annoying. This scope has already been back to Vortex for warranty for other reasons. At $1300, it's not really an option for those want to shoot PRS style disciplines where you need to dial in corrections between shots at distances from 300-600-1000.... again IMHO.

That's my $.002 on "budget" target/tactical precision scopes.....

There's only 3 ways to do this....

Spend too little and you'll be throwing your cash away as it just won't work!

Spend a medium amount, and you'll quickly realize the scope limitations. But you will learn exactly what you want/need/nice to have in a target style scope. Maybe decide that the sport just isn't for you...

Spend an enormous amount of money on a Sawovski, Nightforce and/or (under high price, expensive, quality scope here) then decide you dont like this or that. I want a different recticle, I want different turrets, why didn't I get FFP. Gee, I just don't like shooting LR...

Whew..... why did I do that 1st thing in the morning!

Cheers!

This is my source of information on the SFWA scopes coming into Canada:

h ttp://www.opticstalk.com/swfa-ss-to-canada-and-uk_topic42938.html

Which stated:
"We are proud to announce that we are now able to export our SWFA SS line to Canada and the United Kingdom! Currently, the orders are unable to be done through our website, however, you can email us at International@SWFA.com or place an order by phone at 972-726-7348. Feel free to send us an email with any questions you may have and I will try to make sure it is responded to as quick as possible."

Buy hey, it's the Internet, so who really knows!

Would be cool if they are available here. T-Rex really seems to like them! Don't have one myself. My last 2 scopes were not in this price range (they were in the insane price range, but no regrets!).

Given the limited budget, I'd recommend the Bushnell fixed 10x scope that is just under your price range or spending at least double your budget for the Sightron STAC 4-20 scope at around $800. I heard some good things about Primary Arms scopes but have never tried them. They are in the price range of around $500 for a 4-14x scope. My old tired eyes needs more than 10x or 12x past 600 yards so you're looking at least 14x past 1000yds. Again, you could always do it with less but the prices and the choices available today make choosing a higher power scope a no brainer.

News to me.

I think that just made my weekend!

Thanks!

Burris c4 - look it up!

I have 3 myself, for the money I think they are a great value, although price has gone up past couple years...there was one on the EE within the past week for 350 I think, but I don't need a 4th right now lol...definitely go look for it if I was the OP

More then your budget but way under other options and these scopes will work. I have tested a 3-16X42 sitting on my PRS type rifle and the tracking was consistent and accurate.

With all the needs for an optics to work positively for 1000yd shooting, you either buy really good used, limited features or a well priced option like these STACs. There are many scopes 10 to 25yrs old that work well and around that $400 price now.

Don't cheap out on a new scope in this price range (Elite 10X might just be the only exception).. if the tracking is not consistent and the value you expect..... if glass is blurry and hard to focus... if the reticle options limit your choice to dope conditions, you just bought a very expensive "cheap" scope.

Given how much quality ammo is today, missing is really really expensive.

Jerry

I bought a NIB Bushnell Elite 4-16x (50mm) for $400 to mount on my Rem 700 Tactical .223 Rem.

For the $$$ a Bushnell Elite is good quality glass....4-16 power is very adequate and large 50mm objective lens allows alot of light in for a bright clear image....1" tube.

Also, the Leupold AR series rifle scopes are great .....and sell for around $400

Jerry is so right! Consider saving a bit more $$$ and putting more into a scope for your RPR. A couple of hundred extra $$$ can go a long way, and as Jerry says - quality ammo (and missing with it due to poor optics) is expensive and frustrating!

Another vote for the Bushnell 10X.

The SWFA SS 10X if you want to spend a little bit more ( 450-500$ ).

Falcon scopes are also not bad...

Bushnell 10x mildot
note: this is the newer model to that Bushnell Elite LRS 10 X 40

this :agree: or wait for something better on EE to come along that might be in your budget. I have one I might sell but I'm on the fence. they go for $200-275 used on EE

I also have a SWFA SS 16x mine was more landed in Canada was $580 customs / exchange rate / Itar fees / shipping
