Any reason a standard machine shop couldn't flute a rifle bolt? Or is there a reason it should be done by a smith.

Just curious.

Some machine shops may be a bit uneasy working on a rifle bolt. Unless you can find one with a machinist who has a bit of firearm experience.

Limiting factor will be if you want it spiral fluted, in which case expect some sticker shock as they will likely have to set up a rotary head or a 4th axis unless they already have machines set up as such. I'd try a few differen shops and see what the pricing is but it may be cheaper to send it out to a smith that specializes in that sort of thing.

I'd give you a rough quote for my shop time but we are a one off/repair shop and the price would likely be high with the setup time and tooling factored in.

If you are lucky you may find a shop that wants to take it on for fun if they are slow.

It seems like a simple operation but take word from me as a machinist, things aren't always as simple as they seem and economies of scale factor in a lot!

Thanks guys, I figured as much.

I only asked because the turn around time with most smiths is long, and I have a few small machine shops right around where I work.

I've actually been doing this lately. I'm a red seal journeyman machinist, and I was approached earlier this year by someone from another forum (after I shortened a shotgun barrel for his son) to see if I would flute a bolt for him. I did, and posted pictures on that forum. One thing led to another, and I've probably done 20 or so since, for different people.

Here's a link to my photobucket account with pictures of the work I've done. I see you're in BC- I'd pay return shipping if you would want to send it to me in calgary (this has actually been the majority of my interactions with people).

My turnaround time is typically within a week or two of receiving the bolt, and I'd send it out the same day I finish it.

Let me know!

Really nice work Scott! Have you ever considered any other work like skeletonizing bolt handles, slabbing an action etc.?

Thanks! And so far pretty much all I've done is the bolt/short barrel fluting. I've shortened a couple of shotgun barrels, re-installed bead sights, etc. Nothing major. I'm not a gunsmith, just a fairly mechanically inclined machinist. Not to say that I couldn't do these things, but I'm doing all this on my own time at work, and there's going to be a line somewhere between personal stuff and working for profit. I've already discussed renting time on the machine to flute bolts with my employer. Lol everyone wants their pound of flesh (Which is fair, I don't blame them).

Time is money...I get that.
I like the look of your work and I especially like your turn-around time, I hope you go somewhere with it and keep the enjoyment in it.

I'll post pics when my bolt shows up (by monday) It's Pics #1&2 in Scott's album

He has been great to deal with!

2 week turnaround (with shipping) extremely reasonable cost, and good work to boot. It has no functional benefit, but I think it adds a nice touch. I polished off the existing bolt jeweling.
Pics as promised:

Glad you're happy, the polished flutes look awesome!
