I have my day off tomorrow and I will get all my deer kit sorted out. My hunting buddy and I leave Sunday for WMU 46 and will be out before sunrise on Monday. Good luck to the other hunters going out next week!

Good luck and more cold weather.I will be hunting with 3 of my girls between 72A-B and 73.Ive been out early mornings baiting and checking my cameras but not much sign of a Rut starting in this area.Seems like quite a few does and fawns but no sign of the big bucks yet.SHB

I can't wait myself...... no matter how much I get to hunt other places, whitetail back home is always very special.....

Benny, I will be up in 72/73 area next week at my camp... let me know if you have any luck in a big one, or swing by with your girls for coffee or a beer if you are available......

I am close to you in area 47. I was up about a month ago for a week duck hunting and hiking and did not much deer sign. I was.planning to go up for four days next week but canceled ( not much deer activity ) decided to work.

Things are starting to pick up in 46. So we'll see how the opener goes. The Temps are forecast to be around freezing at night and highs of 8-10 in the day.

I'm all set for 56. I've been looking forward to this all year after a disappointing 2015 season (too warm, no rut). Everything is tuned up and ready for the morning of the 7th. We'll do a bush walk on Friday & Sat. to do a last check of the trail cam, clean up any late deadfall, and one last look for sign. Hopefully, the rut will either be on the verge of starting or in play. Lots of luck to you all!

Bucks are fighting more seriously the past couple days... saw a doe yesterday with her tail straight out and black tarsals... she was being dogged by a medium 10 pointer... don't think the big lads will let him get her... I'm on my way up to hunt now... it's early for rutting activity, but I packed the decoy and estrous spray anyway...

Dad has cancer, uncle has to work and other hunting buddies are too busy this year. I'm heading down to southern Illinois with my bow to hunt with a good friend who's been bugging me for awhile to make the trip. Deer are smaller down there, but they're everywhere and I can shoot as many does as I'd like. Should be interesting, been hunting deer in 56 and 76 all my life so this will be a bit different.

Sorry to hear about your old man. My old man is crippled with arthritis in his spine and a multitude of other health issues. His hunting days are long over. I take lots of pics of us hunting for him and bring him lots of meat when I get a deer or bear. I hope you have a good hunt in Illinois.

I'm heading from Windsor up to WMU 67 next tues and will hunt it for 12 days. The boys tell me that there isn't much activity on the cameras, but some large tracks. I guess I'll find out how it's looking in a week

Just recently started seeing some rubs and scrapes within the last couple days. Bucks are starting to cruise past the camera a little more since the 30th, also seeing some different bucks coming through the area that weren't around during the summer. Gonna be out for some good sits this weekend leading into the circus that is gun season. Can't wait for things to really pick up.

Well I've been in the stand for 20 minutes... this guy came in to check out my grunting and three legged doe decoy (one leg must have fallen out when I pulled it out of the attic).

I don't think this doe liked the competition from the estrous doe scent that I sprayed on the decoy, because she peed all around the decoy... I figure that can only help when the big boys come out.

I have to move easy because they are still 20 yardss away.

Nice tripod decoy..... judging by your results, I may have to remove a leg from mine......

Got my rattle bag ready..... and my grunt tube..... can't wait for monday.....

Nice beefy buck there, I would be sorely tempted.....

I was tempted....particularly because the powerbar died on my deep freezer and I lost 300 pounds of wild meat. I took the whole freezer to the dump and got a new one... all I have for meat now is the buck from last week and a couple dozen grouse, ducks and geese. It was just too early to take a little guy... but I am definitely meat hunting.

See, that's the thing with me too..... on the one hand I live by the motto "don't turn down on day 1 what you would shoot on the last day"...... but I never want my experience to come me to an end either......... it's hard...... and party hunting rifle week one helps because I can use another's tag...... but knowing I have week two and black powder weighs on me......

You have archery as well, and that would make it even harder for me...... because I want all that experience......

It's a good problem to have I guess......

Bummer about your freezer....... lost a couple turkey that way a few years back..... and a pile of cavendish fries..... I gave a sh!t less about the fries......

To be honest, if it had been the last 20 minutes of the hunt instead of the first 20 minutes I wouldn't have hesitated... but there are some very nice bucks around and I at least want to get to play with them a little.... these are the choices we often end up regretting.... but what the heck, the fire is on in the woodstove, the lasagna is in the oven and I have a meeting with Charlton Heston and Brian Keith in "Mountain Men."
