Can't wait for next weeks deer season

I cant believe that decoy works when it's not a fully flocked version?!! You must have some vision challenged deer where you hunt!! :p

Don't worry, when a horny ruttin' buck comes charging in, the decoy will get "flocked" but good...

To be honest, if it had been the last 20 minutes of the hunt instead of the first 20 minutes I wouldn't have hesitated... but there are some very nice bucks around and I at least want to get to play with them a little.... these are the choices we often end up regretting.... but what the heck, the fire is on in the woodstove, the lasagna is in the oven and I have a meeting with Charlton Heston and Brian Keith in "Mountain Men."

That's what its about it isn't it?........ you have great story to tell that will likely play out tomorrow as well, maybe with different results, maybe not........ you observed nature in nature........ it doesn't get much better than that.......

I can't speak for anyone else, but that is why I do it.......... I make sure the freezer is full...... but I make sure I get rewarded for my work along the way.....

Agreed its all about the warm camp fire, lasagna and movies while eating dinner feet up in your favourite la-z-boy chair. Sounds good enough to skip the hunting part!
Now wheres the warm slippers last weekends date knitted me?

Did not see a thing in the stand, on the trek back, last light, 3 Large Whitetails crossed my path 10 yards in front of me.
Looking for one of those decoys on sale, should be 25% off..

good luck to you. i was out this morning and passed on a nice doe. i worked the rattle for a bit and it wasnt 2 mins after i finished she came walking out to see what the racket was all about. she walked right up to me within 30 feet of my ground blind. gave a couple stomps and blows to try and bluff me into moving then she went about feeding. waiting for a big fella to come out.

Well I've been in the stand for 20 minutes... this guy came in to check out my grunting and three legged doe decoy (one leg must have fallen out when I pulled it out of the attic).

I don't think this doe liked the competition from the estrous doe scent that I sprayed on the decoy, because she peed all around the decoy... I figure that can only help when the big boys come out.

I have to move easy because they are still 20 yardss away.

Nice big buck!

My wife and I go for the first week in 56, the second week I am there alone.
It's pure hunting, when I step out the door, I'm hunting.
I hunt daylight to dark, and am totally in to it.
I hunted with a group for much of my hunting career, with, and without dogs. Now I hunt alone.
I loved the friendship and the BS of the camp, but to me, there is no doubt, hunting alone is the ultimate.
Many of the trail camera pics we got are posted in my trail camera thread. I got a few more, including some shoving by a pair of medium bucks.
There are bigger bucks there, just not on camera yet. Found some massive scrapes during the moose hunt. I'm hoping he's not nocturnal.
My gear is ready, my ATV fueled and charged up. I'm getting charged up too.

Best of luck to everyone!

I hunt with 2 other guys over about 600 acres, which gives a good mix of the peace and quiet , as well as the camp experience.

It is nice to have a buddy to help drag when you're successful.

Trailer's all packed, just gotta pick up the perishables this weekend.

Good luck to everyone next week!

Ryan

I have 2 more days at work, then my friend and I leave Sunday morning. Remember everyone, set your clocks back 1 hour Sunday night for the time change. You'll get a extra hour on the rack :)

Typical hunting scenario, I had the big boys patterned and I was "chomping at the bit" to get at them. I passed up that chunky six point the first evening, hoping to take a youngish heavier 10 or 12 pointer for burger and sausage. Yesterday, I had 18 deer inside 20 yards... not one buck! The buggers dropped off the face of the map. In the morning I had 10 does and fawns mill around the decoy for half an hour, a couple bedded within 10 feet of the decoy and started chewing their cuds. I came close to taking a monster doe last night, she had the head of a Cleysdale and the ass of Kim Kardashian... but I passed her up and kicked myself later, she was bigger than the 8 pointer I took last week and she had no fawn. Today was my last day... I passed up 2 does and a fork horn at first light and then just before 9 am, I rattled in a 6 (wanna be 8) pointer... we played cat n' mouse grunting and tip-toeing back and forth, after 30 minutes, I finally had him in full view and shooting position, he was fat and sleek and something in my head said "good chow," but as soon as I drew my bow, he took one step and put a 6" poplar over his vitals... so I held... and held... and held... and thanked Hoyt mentally for 80% let-off and a solid "wall"... and held... and just when I was thinking of letting down, he took a step, and an arrow through the lungs. That deer covered 150 yards in 5 seconds flat, running full out, faster than I have ever seen a deer go, and he was in mid-leap when he realized that he was dead... he did a nice tuck and roll, his antlers digging in and his ass overtaking him, and then he slid for about 20 feet... it was something to watch... and so was the big 10 pointer that had been standing in the brush, unseen, behind him when I shot... the 10 was not nearly as fast, but he didn't stick around. Oh, well... that is the way the cookie crumbles for this year... mission accomplished, the freezer is stocked up again.

I'm getting geared up to go, but it looks like it will be a bit warm in 82A next week. We will see if things are moving. As always, I am excited. I hunt with my father and grandfather. Being a part of three generations sharing one passion is a unique experience. Remember to stay safe and don't shoot the deer wearing orange!

Haha, well, ya got meat in the freezer! Another great memory and story to tell!

Headed out to the Peace River country myself this weekend. Hope to find a Muley and a Whitetail that are asking
to be stored in my freezer, lol. Dave.

It's funny how that they almost know something is weird, and move behind a tree ect... I have had happen several times in the past. Sounds like you got a great deer.
