New Weatherby Vanguard a bit disappointing.

Yes, they will fix it.

But as an aside, that particular model (bonz) has been discontinued for a couple of years - if the box wasn't factory sealed the shop you got it from may have had it out on display, handled etc considerably before it got sent to you.

This is the factory recoil pad installation on a brand new Vanguard S2.

Oh well, flip flops will work.
Ted

Is your Vanguard the youth model with the shorter length of pull?
The end of the stock is shorter and cut a bit different than the standard Vanguard.

Not to be squeaky wheel here Ted....... I assume you tried tightening the screws that hold it in.......

If so, completely unacceptable......

A loose screw was my first thought as well.
I have one that has a butt pad slightly off to one side, but it still sits flush...the whole stock was actually folded over off center and I had to knock down the high side in the barrel channel.

That's it.

I thought it would make a nice gift for a new shooter, but the more I handle it the more comfortable it feels. The short stock will be handy for use when a guy is all parkaed up at -30.

Why would they stick a pad on that doesn't follow the profile of the stock? It would be ABC simple to use the correctly shaped pad. Then, have an extension that follows the same profile of the stock with another pad on it to bring it to the standard length of pull.

Of course that would mean the cost of an extra pad, probably less than two or three bucks for Weatherby.

Are they all like this or just this one?

On the good side, it has a wonderful trigger, and we know it is going to shoot!

Well Mr. Wagner, Weatherby is awn'eer and knows awff yer flippy-flawpie adventures.
I'm willing tuh bet they sent this one to you awn perpose.
Wutt culour you going to yewse furr the T.W. flawpie?

Okay, from the web, here's what it looks like at the standard length of pull.

My that is ugly! V:I:

Definitely a flip-flop candidate.
Ted

On the two earlier production model S2 ;) 'Flame Throwers' I have, they appear to be better profiled, fit and attached to the butt stock

Yes. That is what a well-fitted pad looks like.

Or this flip flop on a 300 Win Mag....

Has withstood several hundred rounds fired, and standing in a gun safe since November 2013.

Rick's Ruger in 338 Win Mag has a double flip flop.

He says it now feels like shooting his 30-06.

What colour would you suggest, Looky?

Plenty of time to think about it. I'm heading to the sack. Early rising tomorrow.

A side issue, nice piece of wood. Very nice! Oh, :) my 270 Win 'Flame Thrower' now has the identical Leupold M8 6X as the one that was on 300 WM 'Flame Thrower' I got from you :d .

I bought one of the youth models for the same reason - it will be great in the cold stuff when your all bundled up trying to stay warm. With the short LOP and the 20 inch barrel it handles real nice!
I took a look at mine and while my recoil pad fits better then yours its not perfect and I think it is as you say because its meant for the full length stock and not the shorter stock profile.
Maybe I need try out the flip-flop option ........
