Hi - I am primarily a target shooter, but my son is looking for a hunting rifle & scope combo that could be used mostly for shooting targets up to 300yds and the occasional deer hunt once a year with friends. He doesn't reload, so he is looking for something that is accurate, has low factory ammo cost, and has enough stopping power for a deer.

Cabela's, Sako A7 soft touch, rifle & scope combo in .243 Win and up. A little above your stated price.

Hey try Savage , they have great accuracy ,great selection in different models. if you get a 308 you can get army surplus ammo affordable price to shoot

Lots of good choices out in the market place today in your price range. The ones I looked at were the weatherby vanguard series 2 and are available with scopes for less than your budget. calibre choices include 243, 270, 308 and 30-06. Another one to consider are the Howa 1500 Hogue Gameking packages that include a 3-9 scope. There are the savage kits in different price ranges also worth looking at but the first two were the ones I was considering before I cheaped out and bought a Remington 783 kit with a cheap throw away scope. For under $500 bucks, I'm pretty happy with the .308. The light contour barrel is good for hunting but might not be to steady for repeated target shooting events. if you don't need target shooting capability, the remington 783 is worth looking at.

Tradex 6.5x55 and a Vortex - spend the rest on ammo,
- that set up will out shoot most "new" rifles . 6.5 x55 is inherently accurate , soft shooting with a B.C. that will blow your mind.
-blue box 6.5 = $ 25.00

try to find a used Tikka t3 in 243 Win, topped with a used Leupold Vx3 3.5-10x40, in some talley rings. Should be in the $1200 range all ready to go

you need to check out Howa 1500. Gameking package. Various calibres. Hogue stock and comes with Nikko Sterling scope. I bought mine at International shooting supplies in surrey bc. I would say it is every bit as good as my tikka but just a little heavier. Before tax it was $860 with everything. I got 30-06

$800 ready to go in .243.

Spending other folks money is great fun and supporting EE vendors is also good.

A quick peek in the EE with your criteria in mind drew me to these ads: (I've no connection to either vendor)

A nice "life time" rifle and a good quality scope for both target plinking and hunting. Together they are close to your price point.

T/C venture in 243 or 308win, with a Leupold VX-1 3-9x40 mounted in Talley rings.

Accurate, Well built, Good fit, and you'll / he'll likely have about $3-400 left over for ammo.
