I am in the process of rebuilding my old doner
tikka m65 action
I have a McMillan A3-5 stock a
benchmark spiral fluted
So this is the rough primary build the new rifle being designed for 1500-1700 yard shooting
I'm a hand loader and can build what I need .i was thinking that I would go wildcat but I'm concerned about
Barrel burn

So hoping there are some wildcat 7MM boys that can guild me
Any info is good info

7mm-300 win mag. Brass is easy to get dies are easy to convert just use a 300wm bushing die, as far as barrel life goes I wouldn't concern yourself to much with it. Barrels are like tires on your truck they wear out and when they do you change them. Another option is the 28 nosler, great ballistics but pricey to load for and only one option for brass. The 7stw is also great and nice because you can form brass form lots of other cartridges. But there's no free lunch if you want to run a 7mm over bore of any kind it's gonna have an effect on barrel life.

I'm going to rule a wildcat bullet an alco 208
and bulding it for energy at 1 mile , so speed has a baring

You might want to consider a 7mm Remington SAUM or 7mm WSM. You have to watch overall length with the heavy low drag bullets, and putting a short action cartridge in a long action may make some sense. Here is a link with a bit of info on the target accuracy 7mm options... Getting brass is the big issue though.

Does the bullet designer have any data to share on how fast this bullet can actually fly accurately?

Big problem when bullets need super fast twists.. accuracy and velocity may not lead to a happy ending. My guess is that 3000fps is about it and you will be burning alot of super slow powder in a long barrel.

What twist do you plan to use?

Wild guess... look at a 7RUM and then go bigger... just make sure you have a powder that will work properly at intended pressures and fill that case well.

Personally, I would have gone to a bigger bore and bullet and saved alot of headaches, if you need to put a hurt on something that far away.

I have to talk to terry and see what the twist on the barrel is from what I can see based on the engagement of bullet is around 1:7 at 3000 ft but I'm thinking that barrel is a 1:9 .
the bullet length is 1.765 so I like the other persons comment about shooting a short action can in a long action .
ill have to see what terry thinks , I have 20 lb of reloader 22 seems to run in everything from my famae 308,3006,6.5,7MM and my 223 this is the rifle that the sightron is going on top of . You never did state a price for the higher end 10x50x60

I can attest Terry has a .284 reamer that is lights out with 180 Bergers.

As Jerry said 3000fps is about it. The ranges you're talking about aren't great for a 7mm bullet. 500 to 800 meter is the butter zone for them.

To do better than a 180 grain VLD Target in 7mm you would have to step up to a 250 or 300 grain Hybrid in a 338 Lapua.

Frigpig I'm already running my little swede out past 1000 with tight little groups
this 7mm will run out a mile

Maybe I misunderstood.. if this is for ELR shooting, lots of options with the 7mm.

If this is for ELR hunting, I would have gone bigger.

For ELR shooting, a 9 twist, I would just build a 284 Win, stoke with 180/183's at 2800fps and be happy happy at 1 mile. 7RM if you want to live in the 195/208gr world.

Done a bunch of ELR shooting and I still like bigger bullets when distances reach way out there. I don't think action you want to use is a long action so that greatly limits options but the 300WM is a gem at ELR distances and big heavy 30cal bullets.

For ELR fun shooting, initial velocity really doesn't do much for you... consistent launches do.

PM or email and we can discuss the SVSS for your rifle. Thanks

Jerry

I'd love to build a 7mm WSM in a long action, but where can you get 7 WSM brass? Winchester stopped making it. I guess 270 WSM.

I just picked up a few 195 EOLs to try in my 7RM, if I'm not overly happy I will be giving the 28 Nosler a whirl. Brass wasn't cheap though at twice the price of Nosler 7RM.

I love 7mm pills and my 2 full custom turn neck 7mm SAUMs are absolute hammers but if I was going to be shooting 1500-1700 I would do a 300 norma mag all the way. If I was going past that it would be a 338 lapua AI .

I just did a 7-300 Win, 3150 fps with a 18O Berger VLD and a 27" Hart. That's horning into close to
STW country with a better potential mag length compatibility. Barrel life is bound to
Be better that STW, can't hardly be worse.
