Not really. .40 S&W splits the difference between 9mm and .45 ACP. Factory ammo is about halfway between the two.

I would just get something in .357 SIG. Having that on the slide looks really cool, and I would get .40 S&W barrels for it if I felt the need.

 
I have at least one of the pistols being discussed.

40 is a great cartridge. It makes nice big holes on the target. I use both 155 SWC and 180 FP in lead bullets and also 180 plated.

With the lead bullets, it is quite cheap to shoot.

As a pure 40, the Glock, the M&P and the FNSL are excellent shooters. I don't think I could rank those three. They all shoot very well. The FNS L was on sale last month for only $350. Great pistol at a fabulous price.

If you want to shoot 357Sig, the M&P and Glock have extra barrels available. I have the Glock barrel in 357 and find it to be the most accurate of all the pistols. For cheap shooting I load the DRG 130 lead RN bullet, sized 358. 3.9 GR of 231 is very accurate.

10.4 gr of Blue Dot under a 124 gr XTP (JHP) is about 1425 fps. Powerful and very accurate.

I run 40S&W brass through a Sig die to make brass. Works perfectly. Case headspaces off the shoulder. Adjust the die to put shoulder in the right place.

One advantage of the Glock for a 2 caliber pistol is that an adjustable sight is only about $25 on ebay. You can easily re-zero the sight, if required.

Glock 22 was my first handgun purchase about 3 years ago. Now I have multiple handguns in 9mm, .45 and .357 mag as well. I shoot my Glock better than the others despite others having better triggers and being in 9mm. Was expecting .40 to be snappier, might be the low bore axis of the glock. Have you picked one yet?

Ordered a used gen4 g22 on Monday. Just waiting on the transfer.
 
I shoot a .40 S&W in a 1911 as one of my "flavour" calibres much like you are wanting to do. I shoot 9mm as my mainstay. If I had to drop a calibre in my quiver I'd let the .40 S&W go first and hang onto the .45 for the big hole option.

I don't care for the .40 S&W in a polymer gun but enjoy it a lot in the 1911/2011 format.
 
I have a Glock 22 with the Lone Wolff 9mm conversion bbl and the .40S&W Lone Wolff bbl as I like to use lead projectiles. I shot less the 50 lead in the stock Glock bbl and I think it was leading up, kicking like h3ll. I have a 1911 in .40S&W, and a few other .40 guns. The 1911 is a dream. The Glock is my least favorite by a long shot. I think it kicks too much due to the light weight. As far as the rounds 9mm and .40 S&W I much prefer the .45ACP, the .38S/.357Mag, the .45 Long Colt over the 9mm/.40. The former rounds do not have the snappy kick.

To be totally honest I only keep the Glock so I can ##### about how much I dislike it. And laugh about their slogan: Glock perfection!
 
Its fun to try all the rounds you can. I still have .357 sig, 10mm and .50AE to try.... lol

However, just for plinking, while i do have a nice Glock 22 with HD Sights. Im planning on getting a 9mm. Ammo is much cheaper.
