A 22-284 Build....The Baboon Slayer...Done Now With Pics

Nope Johnn, never played with a 25, I have owned a 257 Wby since I was a kid so never saw a need for more........or belief one could get more.

Johnn, I have never, ever played with anything 270............I don't believe I have ever even fired one............not sure why anyone would given the 6.5 and 7mm options available. My dislike of the 270 has been since my teens, not a new phenomenon.

Curious as to what initially brought about that dislike of the 270. When I lived in the B.C. central interior, a relative lived close by who had been involved in some 'specialized' long range 'work' in Europe during WW II. For Moose, the 270 was a favorite of his. For some unknown reason, it was never a calibre that sparked my interest. A couple of years ago, I decided perhaps it was time I tried one and picked up a Husqvarna from Ted. I did end up 'parting' with it but have since replaced it with another. A Wby Vanguard S2 in 270 I bought from SuperCub.

What if you moly-coated them? Berger's stability calculator says that even 1:8 and 4000fps is not fast enough to properly stabilize their 90gr bullet.

BULL! How many cartridges are capable of pushing a 90gr 224 bullet in excess of 4000 fps? Hardly any and those that do are on the far edge of performance with only small numbers of users. No bullet maker is gonna produce a product that has niche within niche of supporters.

neither is the 22-284

Well, seeing as how my forklift operator quit and left me unable to finish my trophy room at this time, I took the opportunity to finish the Baboon Slayer. I finished the chambering and polishing and I swapped ends and crowned it and it finished up at 31".........so I guess we'll see if an 80 gn .224 bullet will stabilize at 4000 fps (hopefully) in a 1-12" twist.

Not sure what all you guys are arguing about the 90 gn bullet for...........I said this rifle was specifically built to use 80 gn Sierra MK and it might work with 90s but only trying would tell. I am relatively certain that it will work with 80s though.

Interesting project. If I missed it, I apologize, but I'm curious as to why the 80 SMK, as opposed to other high BC offerings? Is the 80 SMK particularly spectacular in expansion or.......?

Well, that is a very complex question, KH..........So I'll try to give a relatively simple explanation, but this is going to take a lot of serious math and other bullet design explanations like ogive length to dia coefficients and bullet friction coefficients etc............Oh and the main reason, I have 500 of them...........;);););)

The rifle is a stainless 700 short action trued by Dennis Sorensen (Guntech) and the barrel is a Kreiger 1-12 twist heavy varmint stainless. It is installed in a Remington 700 laminated varmint thumbhole stock and has a 40X 2 oz trigger sans safety. The scope is a Leupold 30mm 6.5-20X40 in Leupold QD mounts on Weaver bases. We'll see what she does when the weather clears a bit here.............

The crown which can be seen in the photo is a 11 degree target crown recessed in a protective exterior ring.

Now I have not finished the barrel exterior as it is a quite nice ground finish, but if she works I'll knock the barrel back off and do an external barrel finish and show y'all the finished product.

That's enough pictures of a nice rifle and the theory on how accurate it should be. Let's see how it performs! I have doubts about a 12 twist barrel shooting 80's well. Please remove my doubts. ;)

Like I said, when the weather co-operates a bit better I try and wring 'er out.........Today I was working my bag off hanging mounts, I'm pretty stiff and sore now. Some of them buggers are heavy and unwieldy and the detachable antlers make them very tricky to handle and hang.

Well the monsoons hit again today.........could be a while before I get to shoot and use a chronograph again.........I gotta build my shooting house so I'm not controlled by the weather. I need to make up some more brass..........it is a PITA as they have to be stepped down, fired as 6mm-284, neck reamed then stepped down to 224 and fired then outside neck turned...........THEN I can start working loads for it..........
