11-87 problems the day before deer opens of course.

Hey all. Recently bought a cantilever slug barrel for my old 11-87. Fired a few shots to sight in the other day and the extractor, pin and spring popes out between what i found with magnet and the pin from my 870 i was back in business. I also cleaned the crap out of the parts and bolt before i put i back together. This time i laid out a blanket before i started shooting and it was a good thing. 12 rounds in it happens again. Ive found all the parts luckily, but any ideas as to what's going on? Im shooting 3" sabots. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
 
Probably excessive bolt speed due to the 3" sabots. Try 2 3/4" loads they are more than powerful enough. You could have a burr on the extractor snagging the case and being pulled out by the fired hull. Don't let the Remington 1100 1187 hate bother you. It is just jealousy.

Jealousy?!....Hardly!! Laugh2

I got rid of all mine by the end of the 80's and never looked back.
 
Love my remingtons. 1187 870 pump 597 22win mag 7400 30-06 well.built American guns never had an issue with any of them just have to keep them cleaned and oiled.

Same here I have two 1187's a sportsman 58 a 870 and a 742 woodmaster in .06 love them all they all work flawlessly my uncle has a 870 and a versa max if you have the money the versa max is the way to go so easy to field strip and maintain but they are all great guns I think most the hate comes from people who fail to read owners manuals and or properly maintain and inspect their fire arms before and after each use. I also believe there is lemons in any brand with anything, do your research and your own thing.

I have never had one jam except my 7400 30 06 after firing off a lot of rounds in row. I love the point ability of the 870.

I'm not taking sides, but less than 2 years ago (on my recommendation, knowing he was on a budget) I suggested a buddy get an 11-87 for duck hunting so he got a SuperMag version used, in camo. He loved it, it ran perfectly on anything 2-3/4" (clays) and did fine on 3" steel. Last spring, I was helping him pattern it for turkey and he ran about 3, 3-1/2" #5 Winchester turkey loads through it~no problem, or so we thought. The next round through it (about 20 minutes later) was a #7-1/2" Winchester target load and after taking the shot...we hear a "clang" sound. The stud on the inside wall of the receiver that the interceptor latch pivots on...simply sheared right off. It was the interceptor latch that hit the ground. Stud gone, retainer clip gone, gun was now a single-shot.

I found a gunsmith to repair it, that work was completed...but the gun hasn't been shot since. He got an Italian semi of some kind to replace it.

Now, I'm a Remington fan based on allot of years shooting an older 11-48, and, having had so many 870s come and go over the years. (my 870P, and my kids' 20ga Express remain) Zero issues with any of these guns so I thought I was OK to recommend an 11-87. I'm not sure how I felt about 11-87s before this, but I know how I feel about them now.
