3 Gun Tips and Tricks

Just got home from first 3 gun match. My skills weren't where I wanted them to be for my first match, but I decided to just do it. I finished 6th out of 10. No major screw ups and one miss. I did have a feeding issue with the LAR mags...first round didn't want to strip out of the mag in a stage starting unloaded. All in all it was good and a ton of fun!

I've never looked at them that close, what's the difference between the two brands?

The P5 is a one piece of high quality lever which does not come loose or cause any bolt catch issues. The BAD lever is fine for my precision rifle however I periodically require tightening of the mounting bolt. You can see that the Mil-Spec bolt catch is canted with the Magpul piece that needs straightening ever so often. Also the P5 affords you the ability to perform FCG maintenance without remove it unlike the BAD lever.

I prefer the P5 over the BAD.

You competed for the first time and hopefully had a good time. Don't sweat it.

Well done. A lot of guys never even try because they're scared of looking bad in front of others.

As long as you went home with the same number of holes in you that you started with, it was a good day.

Any major takeaways from the match?

Well I think it's obvious, but knowing and testing your gear well beforehand.

I need another shell carrier...

I also need to work on shooting from awkward positions. Got a few charlies shooting under a table despite double alphas on all other pistol targets I think. Also need to work on pistol at close range in general. The most suprising thing that happened was completely missing a pistol target at like 2M. I would think that would be no problem, but it's not something I've ever practiced at all.

Tip, don't throw your pistol in the dump bucket too hard, it may not like it in there and jump back out...

Tip, with shotgun make your hits, the time for re-engaging and reloading can really add up.

I think I figured out what I want to do for rifle mags. 3 x LAR mags, two of them with magwedge coupler. For stages expecting less than 20 rounds, start with the coupled mags in the gun. For stages expecting more than 20 rounds, start with single mag in the gun, and coupled mags in bladetech pouch. This is so I don't have to drop the coupled mags on the feed lips. Another 5/20 pmag also fits well and accessible in one of the pockets on my 5.11 pants if needed. How does that sound?
