Vanguard (II)

The trigger, safety, and stocks are different.
Trigger is 2 stage in V2 vs single stage in V1.
Safety is 3 position on V2 vs 2 position on V1.
Stock is higher grade polymer on V2.

Just note there are still some V2 rifles in V1 stocks....
This is an s2 stock on top, S1 on bottom, there are lots of different camo patterns but pay attention to the grip area and forestock that distinguish it from the v1

In addition to Hitzy's observations, the V1 has a two position safety and a semi-polished finish on the barreled action (blued version). The V2 has a three position safety and a matte blued finish, looks as though the barreled action was bead blasted before being blued. Biggest difference I see between the Howa and Weatherby is in the stocks and and the Howa's have a 22" bbl on the standard calibers while the Weatherby's use a 24" bbl on the standard and mag calibers. For some reason the Howa's seem to be more expensive then the Vanguard's.

The stocks on both models may look different but when shouldered they feel (at least to me) identical. The trigger on the S2 is a huge improvement IMHO. The several S1's I had were all a little bit creepy in the trigger, and when gunsmith-adjusted to give a good pull the safety became inoperable.

The S2 I have now has one of the nicest factory triggers I've felt; crisp, light, consistent, no complaints whatsoever. These are terrific guns for the money.

I hope this isn't too far off the OP's post.

My understanding is that Howa makes the Vanguard series for Weatherby. Does anyone have knowledge if there is any significant difference between the V2 and the newer Howa series?

Also any opinions on choosing between the V2 or a Howa?

Howas are more of a polished blue finish, and the cocking piece is a different shape, 3 vent holes on the bolt are directed into the mag and not out the side like WBY, blued bolt on the Howas...WBY in the white with flutes, stocks are Hogue for the most part on the lower priced models and free floated (fine stocks BTW), VG stocks are full length bedded to the barrel.

Have the girls hunt too S2 version, the quality trigger was a surprise as was the youth stock (spacer included) feels like a B&C rather than factory tupperware. The 90 degree bolt lift is the only area where it doesn't match much higher priced rifles. Weatherby/Talley scope mounts were about $50 CAD.

The youth and carbine versions have a 20" barrel.

Am so impressed that will pickup a LSS or Boyd's for when I want to borrow it. If go Boyd's route then will think about the PTG AICS bottom metal for it.
