New shotgun or thread the 590Ai?

Ok, so I own two shotguns, the Beretta A400 xplor unico and the Mossberg 590A1. The 590A1 was a splurge buy as I have no "real" use for it. With that said, it's not going anywhere as I don't allow myself many splurge options and a tactical shotgun has always had a spot reserved in the safe. The A400 fills all the rest of my essential needs; bird, waterfowl, trap, skeet etc... However, I've recently been debating between either picking up another shotgun or threading the 590A1 to fill some holes, here are my reasons:

1) Backup hunting shotgun: I work a lot, have a young family and an old house that needs a lot of work. When I get out hunting, it's rare, and I don't want to get stuck on the sidelines trying to fix a problem or running to a shop to get things taken care of. I would like something that could serve me as a backup in the event that something fails with the A400. I had this happen once with my bow and it ruined the majority of the trip, I'm not going to have that happen again.

2) Down in the mud and sludge gun: The A400 is a purdy gun and although I have no doubt it will perform just fine in adverse conditions I'd prefer a beater I can take on those muddy, wet and generally rough hunting trips. I don't mind the odd dent or ding but I'd prefer a beater to toss in the boat or back of the truck on those rougher trips.

3) Trap/skeet loaner: A few times a year at our family gatherings on my dad's farm we do some backyard skeet shooting, nothing fancy. There are about a 1/2 dozen of us but only a couple with our own guns (most don't have their PALs). So the shotguns get passed around. Although they are good guys I'd prefer a lower end loaner for them to share.

So I find myself debating between picking up a third shotgun or maybe threading the barrel on the 590A1 to make it a more versatile backup option. Now I know the popular choice is to always jump on any excuse to pick up another gun, but in this case money I don't commit to this can be committed to another gun instead. So if threading the 590A1 works just fine I'd probably prefer pursing that option and spending the extra cash on something else later down the road. What do you guys think? If the best option is a third shotgun, what recommendations do you guys suggest?

Anyone to weigh in? At this point I'm leaning more towards a new shotgun, without much input on the threading idea it seems to be the safest option. Last chance....has anyone threaded the 590a1 or sees it as a viable option?

The Mossberg has an 18.5" barrel on it? What sights came with it? If it came with ghost ring or the 3 dot sights, I don't think I'd bother with it as a clay gun. Probably would be best left with the cylinder choked short barrel.

i have no problems smashing clays or shooting chickens with my 20" 590 with ghost rings.

I can also smash clays with my 12" cylinder bore D.A. Grizzly, it's just not ideal is all :)

I did it to see if I could, I'm not planning on making a habit of it, lol. I also wouldn't give it to an inexperienced shooter to shoot clays with.

Good point. As a loaner it would be mostly inexperienced shooters using the shotgun. I believe I'll look to pickup another shotgun instead. Thanks guys!

Other idea would be to buy a 28" hunting barrel plus the mag tube and convert it. Only takes a minute.
I have an older 590 Mariner 20" and a 28" hunting barrel + mag tube. Best of both worlds.

I'll take a look at that option but price, thanks.

What about the stoeger m3500? Any opinions?

As an aside, Mossberg offers a Model of 590A1(#50774) that is threaded for their Accu-Choke. Cool. I may have to order one.

CSC has this model in stock. Just picked one up last week. Seems like a good idea to get it with the choke as per the OP's reason for starting this thread.

It is usually cheaper to sell a gun that does not have the features that you need, rather than having aftermarket work done that is not likely to increase the value of an unsuitable gun.

I had my 590a1 threaded for rem-chokes for 3-gun. It cost around $125 once shipping was all figured into it. 20" barrel is good enough for most things on the ground and with a full choke you get a bit more range. Plus now I can spin on a breacher choke for the ultimate in tacticoolness :) I haven't yet but I've wanted to see how it looked. lol

I had the folks at TacOrd thread my 590A1 barrel for Rem chokes. They did an amazing job.

I did the same thing with my 590A1. It came with an18.5" barrel and ghost ring sights. I bought it specifically for deer hunting in thick bush where I might run into a grouse by chance. I also use it for turkey hunting.

To prep it for hunting, I had Casey at TacOrd thread the muzzle for Rem chokes. Then I installed a Magpul SGA buttstock so I could adjust the length of pull. ( I also installed the Magpul forearm just because it looks cool.)
