30 Herrett dilema

I have a Thompson Contender that came with a 30 Herrett barrel. I know that I can make my own brass from 30-30, but I'd really rather buy them as already formed brass.
If anyone knows where I could get some, let me know. If I lived south of the border, it wouldn't be a problem finding the stuff.

Thanks for the link, although I had already found that source. Problem is they probably won't ship across the border. I did email them just to see if they will.
I do a lot of reloading for quite a few calibers, so I guess this is another one I'll have to add to the list.

30 Herrett Brass (50) $59.00 plus approximately $10.00 shipping ($70.00 for 50 mixed headstamp cases)

Sadly, the seller would be in deep doo-doo if that was shipped north of 49 w/o an export permit. We can receive no problem but ITAR says "no way" to shipping. Reloading dies & presses etc. (except commercial high-volume machines) are OK, but no components. Buffalo Arms is another useful source, but only if you live Stateside.

As I understand it, we had the opportunity to be exempt from this nonsense in discussions in the 90's but our government at the time decined. Utterly ridiculous, but, as Lee van Cleef used to say in the Midas ads, "Them's the breaks."

Does anybody know if 30 Herrett and 357 Herrett share the same case length. If you can make 30 Herrett from 357 Herrett I have several hundred...........I am fairly certain you can just run them through the full length 30 Herrett die and load and go. I made them all from 30-30 but they are mixed head stamps.........never found it made any difference in my Contender.

I had stayed away from wildcats for years because I always thought forming the cases was a right pain. Needing to create 7 TCU out of .223, and 7 Int Rimmed out of .30.30 disabused me of that worry. So when the chance to buy a .30 Herrett barrel came along, I jumped at it. Admittedly, .30 Herrett takes more than just neck sizing and fire-forming but it was still simple, and fun. Only thing I might do differently would be to buy new .30-30 brass, instead of creating empty brass through my Marlin 336.

Yeah, you have to size it down to the new shortened case, trim it, and turn the neck, but like most rifle cases in the Contender, they last a long time, and they are a hoot to shoot. Remember, this cartridge was used in the early days of IHMSA to pop rams at 200m standing, and Creedmore style. Put a pistol scope on it and shoot it supported, and you will amaze the blasters and gamers at the range. If you have gongs at your range, it will ring a six or ten incher all day long, until the recoil makes you wince!

And, if you get the chance to take it south, it is a decent black bear/deer cartridge.

Just for s****s and giggles, I would like to get my hands on a .357 Herrett barrel and give that a shot.

I loved my 357 Herrett. Had a 10" bull barrel for my contender and shot 180 gn Speer silhouette bullets as well as Speer 180 gn flat nose rifle bullets. It was the first cartridge I shot a possible 40 with. I had an aimpont on it and never had to adjust it, just hold feet on chickens, belly on pigs, dead center on turkeys and top back on rams............voila 40/40. After using 44s for several years loaded to the nuts with 240 and 265 gn bullets the 357 Herret wasn't bad to shoot at all.

No they are unlike as the 30 is 1.605" and the 357 is 1.750" which permits the ability to shorten the 357 brass.

The thought had crossed my mind to shorten 357 Herrett brass if I can get it more easily than 30 Herrett, but maybe it would be just as easy to start with 30-30.
Just a matter of interest, has anybody used 38-55 brass for this?

I think 38-55 would be a real PITA going down from 379 to 308 and trying to make necks from case body. However 32-40 would likely be a breeze, just run into the FL die and trim and fireform. That long tapered case is very easy to work with. The 357 Herrett is the easiest because I just fired factory (or reloaded) 30-30, 32 spl or 32-40, trimmed and FL sized and loaded.
