I was looking for an original K98 bayonet in very good condition, with an original frog and scabbard... but not necessarily matching ($$$), so I picked this up from an upstate New York-based eBayer. As usual, I probably paid more than I should have with the crappy exchange rate, but I didn't care to wait for a better deal. I am quite excited, though you never know what you'll get until it's in your hands...

Its not a post war bayo, but its a late war bayonet. Early war bayonets are wood, although the value is really not much different. I picked up a similar one last summer for sixty bucks with no matching numbers but it was still in the cosmo and had no marks or sharpening.

The bayo is clearly shown as a 41. Bakelite grip scales can be fine in 41. And walnut grip scales can be fine on a late 44. Grip scales do not date the bayonet at all. Except really ealry wont have bakelite, but for pretty much all war years either is fine.

I can't comment on what's going on behind the scenes, but the bayonet pictured in this thread is composed of original components. While it is not a matching set, I see no evidence that anything is post war.

There are 2 bayonets being discussed in this thread. The OP's bayonet is original and wartime.

Sorry all. Yes, I combined two issues into one thread, that is my mistake. Yes, I am interested in your comments regarding the above photos. I have deleted my other comments.

Looks like a decent set. Not sure what you paid but a mismatched bayo is like a $100 item. Frog, another $50.

I paid a wee bit more :) but I wanted an unscathed and unsharpened '41 original for my '41 Norwegian K98. I am ok with mismatched, and I'm sure many German soldiers carried mismatched stuff anyway :)
