SKS lamenated stock refinishing suggestions

this is what i did for my last sks refinishing:

1) steel wool + krud cutter to get the shelac off and clean out any remaining oils, smooth the finish
2) applied a mix of linseed oil and bitumen (ashpalt will work) - this is what the soviets used originaly on some of thier stocks - the oil soaks into each layer of the wood differently which makes the colour or each layer shift depending on what angle you look at the stock.
3) finish with a spray on laquer.

wish I had pics but i did this for a friend who was very pleased with the results
Thanks for this. I think I will give this a try. Never messed with wood so should be interesting.

Regards

I prefer the wood stocks over the laminate for ability to clean up and polish the stocks. The laminate seems to be harder to clean up even though they surely are more durable. I have 2 laminates and a wood stocked sks and I much prefer the look of the wood. Keeping that in mind it was a laminate stocked 56 sks that I took hunting this year.

Wood us easy to clean and strip with degreaser and natural/citrus wood stain remover. Takes a few coats and rinse with water between. Let dry, sand or steel wood to taste and then stain and or true oil/tung oil. Done. Results loom beautiful without being a specialist. Laminates just done clean up the same in this process but can still look great.

Methyl Hydrate is the way to go .
The shellac just melted away using a scotchbrite pad.
Carefull with this stuff...no smoking !...good ventilation !...flash burns with that blue flame that's really hard to see

Didn't bother with staining .
The final finish is varnish , cut down to about 30% and rubbed in with a clean cloth ...very thin coats .
