Fired off about 20rds from my Mosin the other day. Man that recoil is brutal. Is there something I can put on my shoulder to absorb the recoil? I don't want to modify the rifle in anyway nor do I want to spend big bucks for a shooting vest..and I am left handed. I wonder how the Ivans managed it on the eastern front.

Was it a 91/30? If so, you've got a whole new adventure ahead of you if you try a 38 or 44 carbine.

You can buy a strap on shoulder pad, I have one by Winchester.

Morbid obesity probably helps too.

My solution- only shoot cast bullet reloads in my 91/30's and Polish 44. Use cast in all my bolt milsurps. Cast is the way to go. Non corrosive, accurate, usually less than a third of the cost of jacketed bullets. Low recoil and very limited bore wear. Cases last almost forever including 303 Br.

The PAST Recoil Shield is what I use to avoid shoulder punishment from rifles with heavy recoil.

It's you.91/30 doesn't kick all that much.Like someone said "If it hurts you are doing it wrong".
M44 and M38 do kick more but that might be just perception due to shorter barrel.
Get something in 223.

Its probably the way you hold your rifle against your shoulder. When shot is fired rifle recoils against the shoulder and that's when its uncomfortable.
Solution is to hold rifle butt against the shoulder firmly and even leaning in to it, thus reducing the slack. While shot is fired this way the whole body absorbs the recoil not just the shoulder and therefore not as harshly noticeable. Even shooting in t-shirt this method allows shooter to fire as many rounds as needed to win the competition without any discomfort, even with standard mosin butt plate.
