Hi , I`m thinking about mounting a scope on my model 81 , what is the best way of doing this and where do I get the mount ? I`ve looked at the weaver converta mount and their side base system are there any other mounts and which is best ,any help is appreciated .

I had an 81 in 35 Rem a few years back . It had a weaver side mount on it , which is about your only option . The 81 has been out of production for many years now , so there aren't any mounts offered by the major manufacturers . I think Brownell's carry the weaver mount , but I may be mistaken .
If your 81 is in good shape , I'd probably leave it original . They do have some collector value now , and any holes in the receiver will lower the value . I'm not saying don't do it , but there are a lot of easier options out there . What round is your 81 chambered in ?

anglia2 ,thanks for responding , my 81 is in 35 Remington and already has holes that were plugged after a previous mount was removed, these holes form an X pattern on the receiver ,where the word Woodsmaster is located.

Those holes are from an old vintage Stith mount. The rear mount/ring was held on by the 5 screws in an X pattern and the front sleeve that the scope slid into was attached using the rear iron sight holes. the screws were just longer as they still went through the iron sight with the scope sleeve mount underneath it.

There is a picture on that website in the gallery section. The full website can be viewed at ww w.thegreatmodel8.remingtonsociety.com

I have an excellent condition model 81 with one of these set-ups and it is a very cool system! A tad heavy and not a one handed carry rifle any more as the scope sits right where your hand wants to carry it at the balance point.

Love these rifles! I have 13 of them in all calibers except .25 Rem. If anyone wants to get rid of one in .25 Rem or knows the whereabouts of one, I'd be very interested!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Ian
