The love of the odd balls

I consider an oddball something that isn't made by the parent company anymore or a wildcat that isn't adopted by a parent company

Most are just uncommon bug can be easily sourced online. May not be cheap and shipping my hurt but it is obtainable.
Try finding 22 R lovel or as Doug mentioned many of the old lever gun rounds. And as to that why did the 40 cals die out? Did rifleman become less manly each generation? The recoil couldn't be the answer I hope not anyways. My cartridges of the world has like 40+ 40 cal cartridges. Nowadays a 40 caliber is only common in a handgun

More of a "what do we need these old rounds for" then a lack of manliness.

I don't feel that I have any true oddballs and I have; .257 Roberts, 7-30 Waters, 7X57, 7X64, .358 Win, .350 Rem Mag and 9.3X74R, in addition to the ones you can buy ammo for at CT.

While the above is true, I do have an "oddball" project pending in my shop... I had Dave Kiff make me a custom reamer for a 7.62X57, essentially 8X57 necked down to .30 caliber. I also have the blueprints and a custom die set from Whidden Gunworks for new cartridge, which I have come to call the "7.62 Medium." At some point in the near future the project will be completed on a Ruger M77 MKII Standard rifle... at which point, I will concede that I do indeed have yet another "oddball..." allbeit, one that is quite easy to manage with standard .30 cal bullets and brass after a single pass through the FL die.

Awdd Bawlzs are keepers.

Nawt a foto to be seen?

Maybe a little bit oddball

7.5x54 French for a sportered MAS 36. The mismatched bolt rendered headspace a no-go and CAREFULLY fire-forming PRVI brass left the necks stretched too thin for good neck tension.

Re-formed Remington 30-06 brass with the shoulder set at the proper length.

Left - 4x fired RP brass w/ 165gr BTSP Interlock

Middle - 3x fired RP brass w/ 147gr FMJBT pulled from Chinese 7.62x51 surplus

Right - Fire formed RP brass w/ 127gr FMJBT pulled from Chinese 7.62x39 surplus

Why? Do you have lots of 57 brass you want to use?

I like the case... have thousands of brass and thousands of .30 caliber bullets...

I already shoot 6mm, 7X57 and 8X57... so why not... this one only has to make sense to me... but the concept has as much or more going for it than most others... easy to find brass, one step FL sizing, no fireforming, plethora of .30 cal bullet options from dirt cheap to premium and 100 - 220 grain options... and enough case capacity to move them along with some haste... sounds good to me.

EDIT; I forgot my .257 Roberts.

Ah Ha , the very man who has the previously discussed 8X68S ! How's it going brother ? By the way , why do they call you metric man ?

Why? Not sure actually.... Maybe I was an early proponent of the metric system....

And no, you're not getting that 8 x 68S back!

I think I could get behind that....... what type of velocity are you expecting?.....

Only one oddball in my safe, a .375 H&H. Boy, you should see the looks I get when I mention it to anyone. Only two known rifles in that chambering on this side of the province.

The curious ones in my cabinet,

.375 Flanged Magnum
.375 2 1/4" Nitro Express
7x57
7x57R
.257 Roberts
5.6x50 Magnum just added

On the loading bench without a gun anymore / currently / still a dream,

.577 Nitro Express
.450 Rigby
.505 Gibbs (stickhunter's rifle)

...and I tell clients to pack .270, .30-06, 7mm Rem, .300 Win, .338 Win, .375 H&H. :p

Metrics are interesting to me, in original form and wildcat. In the rack are 6.5x55, 9.3x57 (3), 9.3x62 (2), 7x57 Ackley, 8mm-06 Ackley. Also 222Rem, 358Win, 416 Taylor, 404 Jeffrey, and one I suspect very few others if any has, a 416x2" on a 600 Mohawk. Hard to find ammo at CT for sure......

Without going to the gun room: 22 hornet, 17 Rem, 30-40 Krag, 38-55,45-70,50-70,50-90 Sharps, 577/450,577 Snider, and some ML. Had many of the old bp cartridge rifle ( wish I still had most!). Don't miss the 460 or the skeleton stock 308 Norma.

Wow! Compared to most of the guys posting here I am just a newbie to odd calibers.

I just bought a Remington 700 in 8mm Remington Magnum do discover how much recent change in security policies in the States affected my availability of brass for that caliber. Neither shops nor private sellers will ship unprimed brass abroad as it is considered as ammo. :(

I live in the EU, so metric calibers are nothing special here. Maybe we can exchange metric for 8mm RM?

8mm Mag might be hard to get here in Canada as well. We can't get brass shipped from the US either. If you can find here in Canada that would be a big help.
