I bought a 30-06 a-bolt 1 in pretty rough shape no rust mind you, re-did the stock and was thinking cutting the barrel down from 22" to 18.5", make it a bit of a brush gun, any thoughts? or just stupid? i realize she'll kick like hell, but entertainin the thought non the less

Go for it. Its your gun. I cut down a marlin 444xlr from 24" to 18.5 and don't regret it . don't think marlin will make any more of those and there hard to find.

Go for it, if you can't have a bit of fun with firearms why bother shooting at all. Gives you a reason to try any other normally goofy mods you may want.

Other than being a tad bit louder it won't make much difference in killing ability. The rifle will loose some front end "hang" and may be a bit harder to shoot well off-hand.

It will lose velocity and the recoil will probably be less but the bark (noise) will increase. Factory 180 ammo may make 2500 ft/second.

What did you do with your front sight? Definately cutting down my jm 1895 45-70 22" to 18.5" not a huge fan of the 1895g straight grip. When my budget allows the 444 and 450 will be next on the list! Thanks for all the positive responses, oh did mention im cerakoting the a-bolt cobalt, should be interesting!

I filed in a dovetail and put in a tall front post. The gun also support a peep sight. Gun smith can re drill and tap the original back on as well.(I dont have that technology)

You could buy a guide model and swap bottom metal and stocks then sell the long barrel with strait grip as an option as well

It won't kick any more. In fact with the reduced velocity it should kick less. However it will be louder.

Did a 300wsm to 19" and a 8x57 to 18 3/4. Never regretted it. If you can slug the barrel and find a tight spot that's the best place to cut it. Stiff cleaning rod tight patches and good scale works.
