I'm looking to buy a Smith and Wesson range kit, but I am torn between the M&P 9 and the M&P 40. Does anyone know if the 40 S&W round has any significant advantages over the 9mm? I'm just looking for a handgun to shoot paper with and maybe do some competitive shooting at my local club. I am leaning more towards the M&P 9 since ammo will be slightly cheaper.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

I've heard that the M&P 40 feels better to shoot than the 9 version; on the other hand, you can't go wrong with the price and availability of 9 mm. Especially if you want to grab another piece that may only be available in 9 mm.

I have the 9mm and .22, both are real good shooters and if they aren't, I can only blame myself. 9mm ammo is gonna be cheaper, which means more down the pipe, which means more experience, which means. . . . . you get the idea.

9mm is the way to go. Especially if you're not reloading. Factory .40 ain't much fun to shoot. Very snappy. Grows old fast. May want to look at other 9mms other than the one you're interested in. They arn't great. Several members of our Club have them and seem to put them up for sale pretty quick. Check out the CZs.

I disagree with the above post about .40 getting old.

I shoot .40SW and the felt recoil or snappiness depends alot on your pistol. Mine is a Steyr M40A1 and I love it, mind you the bore axis on my pistol is far lower than the M&P 40.

9mm is cheaper but you can find deals on factory .40 that puts it within 5 cents a round compared to similar 9mm.

Just my two cents! Can't let all these 9mm fans run this thread!

The 9mm gives you an extra 200 rds /1000 vs the .40.
9mm guns hold resale better vs their. 40 kin. If you are a new shooter, the. 40 definitely kicks more which makes the learning curve a bit steeper.
Paper will not care what size hole you put in it.

9mm. Easier to find, less expensive if you're buying the bulk stuff, more options when reloading, just as effective punching paper or otherwise.

I've not shot an M&P in 9mm but I've owned a .40 for a number of years. I find it very comfortable to shoot with very pleasant recoil. It's been accurate and 100% reliable for me, too. The ammo is more expensive, of course, but if that doesn't bother you, I'd say go for it.

I don't know if it's an option to S&W's

But I opted for a Glock in .40 and a 9mm conversion barrel. Best of both worlds, and for what it's worth I don't find the recoil of the .40 to be at all over bearing.

.40 .40 .40...my fave round by far...shoot twice as much .40 than any other....45 is just too darn expensive right now...and 9 doesn't have the same kick....jmho

I prefer the 40 I got MP 9mm but I am regretting it..

Nice thing about the 40 is you can download it easy to a minor load and it feels lighter then 9mm factory.
4.4 Grain of WSF or Long Shot with 180 or 200 grain bullets and its super light round.

The only advantage that 40s&w has over 9mm is that it will empty your wallet faster.

2-3gr of unique and a 158gr cast in a 9mm will feel like nothing at all.

I am not a .40 fan in the slightest, BUT, I did notice during the last ammo shortage, that it was the only centerfire pistol ammo around for a good solid 2 years. Just saying that even if you get a 9mm, maybe having a 40 collecting dust is not such a bad idea.

I recently sold off all of my 40S&W pistols while at the same time switching over to 9MM. There is nothing wrong with 40S&W. I loved the kick. Unfortunately arthritis is developing in my hands and the kick was starting to bother me so I only shoot 9MM and 22LR now.

I have shot the 9mm and the 40 . as others said the 9mm is'nt as snappy as the 40 . it depends on how much coin you want to spend on ammo and if you reload or not . the M&P from what I have heard has a supported chamber so reloads are'nt such a concern like a Glock from what I understand .

the former range warden at my club has a M&P 40 and he reloads cast bullets because the barrel is'nt polygonal like Glock and when I asked him how he likes the 40 he said I love it . accurate and reliable. but 9mm is cheaper to shoot . I like my CZ 75s though . all steel and they feel much nicer in the hand . your choice brother.
