Ruger Mini-14 accuracy

This is my 180 series Mini 30 which is accurate enough for MOA(animal)

I got my Mini-14 decades ago. Yes it is one of the less accurate minis'. But I don't care, it shoots well enough for me, which means it takes out jugs of water and the odd pumpkin. Nice thing about the Mini is it works when you pull the trigger.

Now if you really want poor accuracy from an early mini, go get a box of the heaviest 223/556 bulleted cartridges and watch the group grow.
 
I see that Hornady makes a 75gr SP 22 caliber (0.224") bullet. 1:8 twist required according to the information on the box so these wouldn't group well with the Mini-14 since it has a 1:9 twist.
 
In order to get your accuracy down is pretty simple if you are good with polishing things. I was constant MOA with iron sights with a 583 series. Here is what I did all by my lonesome to achieve it:
1. replace the .100 gas block bushing to a .050;
2. 1911 bushing front and back of the op rod;
3. Polished the trigger parts;
4. Thinned the front blade sight from 085 to .050; and
5. added a Ultimak scope rail to the top.
There is a video made by gundoc where he shows how to do a trgger job as well, PM me and I will send you the link, its not hard to do.
Many will say you will need a strut but since its a 58X series you will not and will only see a small improvement.
For general info, everything before the 58x series with the pencil barrel sucked, the taper barrel is where things got better.

edit, watch the weight of your bullets as well.

The triggers on these Ruger Mini's aren't bad (unlike the ones on their Mark II and Hawkeye bolt rifles :rolleyes:) but I'm sure a better trigger will result in tighter groups. The bushing size reduction is an interesting improvement.

You would be correct about the trigger. I found by just a simple polish the trigger pull dropped and was a consistent pull. The bushing size stopped that hard slamming of the system and a drop in distance for thrown spent brass. It was about 8 feet and would pile up in 1 spot.

I like the Aimpoint, how do you find the 2 MOA dot out past 100rds?

I tried some 69gr prvi bullets reloads, and they went all pie plate on me. They were a couple moa out of my bolt gun, so the bullet itself wasn't very good imo
 
Ive got a 582 from 2012 and i love it.
i did put on a accustrut because i wanted to see if it made any difference and i did find that it did in fact close my groups up by 25% over running without the accustrut.
while i do love wood stocks i love the Hogue stocks a little bit more.
truly love my mini14, my fav gun beside my Ruger Scout.

20 rounds of surplus ammo fast firing at 2+" MOA is all i need my gun to do.

It's not bad really considering I have no magnification. I dropped a yote at full run the other day at about 150. I have shot and consistently hit gophers out to 200 by dialing the dot down to as dull and tiny as I could get it and still see it to shoot along with a good steady rest. I am thinking of picking up a 3x magnifier simply because my 53 year old eyes are not what they used to be and with that being said the Aimpoint sight is for me far, far superior to irons plus much more compact and balances my rifle better than a scope I had purchased for it.
