Im in the market for a new chronograph, and am a little behind the times on what is available these days.

Was hoping for a few fact based opinions/suggestions from fellow cgn'ers.

The most important features I am after are reliable low light performance and accuracy.

Along with make/model suggestions, feel free to incude retailers where units are available.

happy shooting,

I use an Alpha Master (red with remote). It works well outdoors with the reflectors on it, providing you get it about 10 feet from the muzzle. Have not used it indoors so can't comment on that kind of low light. I initially questioned the accuracy, until I had the opportunity to shoot through two of them at the same time. They gave virtually identical results, so now I trust it.

I can't comment on other brands, as I have not used them. However, the type that mounts on the barrel of the gun is not going to be useful to do ladder testing. The weight of the unit will affect the barrel vibration characteristics, which is the whole point of doing a ladder test.

Google is friendly, correct. So are experienced real world opinions :)

OK, if you put it that way. I have a Magnetospeed (the larger one, not the Sporter model). It is very easy to use, I have all of the extra pads to fit all barrel contours. It works in any light. Fast and easy install. I have tried the LabRadar as well. Not so easy to get set up with your smart phone or tablet or lap top. But it works great. You do need to have it set up the proper distance and angle (sweet spot) for it to work properly.

I found the Magnetospeed easier, cheaper, and of course smaller to haul around. They give really close results (within 5 fps between the two).

As for the Caldwell ones, I've only seen them get shot and fall to pieces. I haven't actually tried one. I hope this helps.

Edit: Western Metal has the Magnetospeed.

My magnetospeed ( sporter) was great UNTILL lately it has started coming up with "fault 2 "which says it is excess cable spinning ? I have used it maybe a dozen times and putting it back into the container is the only times I have moved the cable ! I was impressed, now not so much . I'm going to try and contact magnetospeed and see what they say . I'm thinking week spot , I will post what they have to say about this .

Thanks everyone for your input. That radar lab does look like the cats pajamas. The ease of set-up, no cords, wires and sky screens to fiddle with.
A shooting buddy has the CED unit. Very accurate, although I find the set-up a pain and reliability is very dependant on an ideal light source without the infrared kit. I'll start saving for the radar lab.
