I can see myself hunting in the future but Im clueless as to what to use. All I have right now that kind of fits the bill is an old SKS but that aint gonna cut it.

I`m also gonna get into the long range game which Ive narrowed down to either a Ruger Precision Enhanced or a Savage Stealth, this will either be in 308 or more likely 6.5. From handling both guns I would say that the Savage would probably be a good hunting gun due to the weight but Im leaning towards the Ruger which I feel is more of a bench rest gun as its quite weighty in comparison.

I should also say that I have heard somewhere that only certain calibers are suitable for hunting but I have no clue which so some pointers would be helpful

Here are my thoughts with an explanation of my logic:

H&K SL8 - I have an itch for an H&K and these are supposed to be super accurate, it would also tick off the 308 box in my collection as I currently do not own one

Tavor - I like the aesthetics of the Tavor and I really like the compact bullpup configuration, supposed to be good quality too. Not sure if I would go for the last Gen regular Tavor or the new X95 variant and also not sure on which caliber (223 or 5.56 - is there a difference?)

XCR-L - Could get it in 7.62x39 which would be cheap to run, again I like the aesthetics of the gun particularly in Keymod

XCR-M - I like the looks and while its not as compact as some of my other choices it seems like a good bet and again ticks the 308 box

Thoughts?

It work but I don't like pistal grips and and big mags and heavy rifle
I would start with a cheep norinco m14 and see how you like hunting with it
I don't like the Modern Hunter but I do like the M14

My apologies, you are correct, I was mixing it up with another (restricted) H&K

So is 223/556 sufficient/legal for hunting?

Depends on what ,where and how far.
Not sure of calibre limitation on big game out west.
Most people consider it a varmint round and maybe a small deer round .

Im having a 6.5x47 built for me, hunting/target shooting.
CFW 20 inch barrel
Cadex chassis
CTR stock
Stiller action
Timney 510 trigger.

Shouldn't be to bad at about 8 or 9 lbs.
My buddy shot a moose with his RPR .308 and that thing weighs about 11 lbs.

Can't hunt large game with ( moose/bear) with .223 in NL.

For an NR black rifle in .308 I'd be thinking:

1) XCR-M...takes AR mags, AR-ish furniture and handling, semi-auto, can be lightened by choosing keymod and light barrel and in my case same mechanics as my XCR-L

2) Troy PAR...takes AR mags, AR furniture and handling, pump action

Or

3) Norinco M14 in a Blackfeather stock...semi auto, no AR mags but I can get over that, AR furniture and handling again just heavier

But that's just my thinking...ymmv

Sounds like a nice build

I was quite surprised at how solid the RPR is - the Savage Stealth feels like a toy in comparison

So is it 308 and above only over there? Calibre is the first thing I need to figure out

I thought you had a MH and a couple of uppers to go with it?

The XCR-M does kinda tick all the boxes, like you say I`d be leaning toward the lighter barrel and keymod setup for practicality

The .223 rifles are too expensive, heavy and make too small a hole for most game.
If all you do is varmint up to small game, then the Tavor or the Keymod XCR-L would be the only ones on your list I would agree to.
Most hunting is hiking with a rifle. You'll appreciate any weight you can save.
The XCR-M is about 12Lbs loaded with a scope, no bipod. And LONG!
The novelty of carrying a black rifle will fade quickly when you have to lug it around for a day.
For hunting, stick to a nice bolt action in 30-06 or .308. Put a good sling and 3-9x scope on it. It'll be more comfortable, take most anything you can shoot around BC, lighter in weight and come in less in cost than a Tavor, SL-8 or XCR.
YMMV

So forget 223/556? That only leaves 308 which narrows down my choices quite a bit.....

For deer you could probably get away with it although I personally don't like putting myself in a position where I have to get away with something to be successful. In respect to moose definitely forget 556. If you want a reason why, YouTube the following "Steve Rinella charged by moose". Even if you don't want a reason why watch the vid anyway...it's a great lesson about hunting moose.

I had a very nice browning Xbolt 7mm, about 6 lbs. My next gun is about 9 lbs.
It'll be used mostly for target but it'll take my moose next fall.

But I agree,if you find it difficult carrying a 9 or 10 lb gun around ,then get a light bolt gun.
Or lift some weight:)
