So I'm about to pull the trigger on two set ups... One is the Rem 700 Long Range in 7mm Rem Mag and the other is the Ruger Precision Gen2 in 6.5 Creed, for glass I have chosen the Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50 SFP VMR-1

This will mostly be my long range gong ringing unit, but would like to take it hunting once in while(Not worried about weight, both are fairly heavy). So should I spend the extra and go with the 6.5 or save a little money and go with the 7mm?! Thanks

That sounds like a personal problem, If you are counting pennies you shouldn't buy either and theirs no such thing as pennies. If your flush go for the ruger, either way you'll have lots of fun. Don't mean to be a d*** but both would out shoot me without an optic that costs about the same as the rifle and high end bi-pod and sand bag rear, etc... Then I'd also need a range longer then 500 meters to go shoot on. I'd get the ruger my brother swears by 700's I don't like 6.5 creed though as I don't reload much.

Thanks, yeah that is my problem. Just starting to get into the reloading game, haven't got all my gear yet! Sledding season is upon us, so the ol' bank account is just hating me lol.

For hunting, mostly white tail/mule and coyotes.

Forget the vortex hst got two 4x16 's one went back on warranty took months to get back on he other one on track properly, it will go back!! No more vortex!!

With your goals I'd definitely do the RPR in 6.5. Lapua is now making brass, it'll shoot the lights out, and won't beat the crap out of you.

I would likely save up and step past that scope though. Maybe a PST, or a sightron?? There are some available on the EE often.

I shoot a 7mm Rem Mag for hunting. I take it to the range a couple times a year. No way would I want to shoot one for LR shooting where you go through 20+ rounds in a sitting.

Go 6.5.

There's nothing wrong with 7 rem mag or 700's, once fired brass is plentiful and cheap reloading components won't break the bank and if you want a rifle mostly for gong ringing I might suggest the Remington sendero sf2. It's barrel and stock are a little heavier, more suited to the bench life but not to heavy to hunt with as I do.

I recently got the 700 Long Range in .300 Win Mag, and put the HST 6X24 on it. So far it's been awesome. After zeroing it I hung a gong at 450yds and was smacking it every shot no problem. I know that's not very far but I just started in long range and that's the farthest shot I've ever made.

As for the recoil issue, the rifle is so heavy that it's basically nonexistent. I was hesitant about getting the win mag when I'd be shooting 40-60 rounds in a sitting, but there's nothing. Comparable to my M14 in .308 I'd say.
