A friend gave me these two mag pouches some time ago. While researching them on the internet I discovered that there have been reproductions made complete with WW2 era makers names stamped on the pouch. The lighter colored one by JS &S seems authentic as the ink stamping looks genuinely faded and the canvas has a noticeably musty odour. The darker coloured one has different coloured trim and the ink stamp is less faded. Of the two, I suspect this one may be a repro. Anyone have any knowledgeable opinions on the authenticity of the two pouches?

In 1983 I bought about 6 of the darker green pouches for $1 each at a surplus store in London, Ontario and I still have 2 of them. They are identical to your AVERY 1943 pouch in every way.

I don't know if anyone was making reproductions at the time. I suspect that yours is the real deal and not a copy.

That's interesting because the guy who gave them to me lived in that part of Ontario during that time period. Thanks for the Info Ianshoka!

I'll argue in favour of genuine article-

Different manufacturer could easily lead to variances that wouldn't preclude accepting the batch.

I'm noticing that other than the colour and details like where the flap button is fixed aren't identical, but factors such as the different fabric between mag pouches and their flap are the same between the two items, the rightward offset of the button's backing location (the same), style of stitching at the flap's bend (identical) are the same between the two items; sez to me built to the same spec with minor differences.. If not original, wow somebody put in a lot of effort to duplicate a WW2 item like a carbine mag pouch.

If you look at the metal fastener on the back you should be able to read the makers name with a magnifying glass. research them.

Web equipment manufacture is an interesting subject. I've got a Viet Nam era map case, made by the Institute for the Blind, go figure. ;)

Grizz

I don't have a magnifying glass, but I enlarged the pictures. They both have the same fastener, BAU FASTENER CO PROV RI. I'm convinced now that they are both genuine. Thanks everybody for the help.

Hi Brandon,

They appear to be nice originals. These were surplus'd in crates and available for a very long time after WWII. They are probably worth between $25 to $40 cad each.

Hope that helps!

I agree with Steve!
Legit originals. Nice maker marks from a couple of contractors that were not the typical "big guys". Cheers Paul
