If I recall...and this is a while back, so I might be totally wrong on some of these...but:
1. I can't sell deer meat that I have harvested.
2. I cannot barter it for other game that another hunter has killed
3. So I assume I cannot request to buy another hunters venison/moose etc.
4. I can give cuts away to my friends at no charge.
5. So is there proper verbiage? "I would like you to give me your excess meat for free" ..are you allowed to say that?

Pretty sure that's all ok, I own a butcher shop so for me it's considered game trafficking. As long as you legally harvest your animal I'm pretty sure you can do what ever you want with it. As long as you are not doing it as a business.

Lots of grey areas. We once had a real good in depth chat with a CO we used to hunt with occasionally and that was his exact words. There are lots of grey areas. As for trading or bartering it would not be considered so if you gave your buddy a bunch of moose meat and he said here is some deer. If you both give each other a gift of game meat it is not a trade by law. And contrary to what many seem to believe and try to convince others of you do not need a hunting license to posess game meat, you only need a license to hunt. Also you can LEGALLY have a posession limit for each person in your household. Example you have hunted grouse each day for a week and you have acquired your legal posession limit. You can by law now give those birds away and start hunting them again. So lets say you have a wife and two kids? You may give your posession limit to lets say your youngest child. Theynow possess a possession limit of grouse and you do not. So out you go and after you have reached your possession limit you decide you want to give that limit away again you may do so so this time you give it to your next child. Well now the kids each have their possession limit and you do not so you may start to acquire your limit again. You can do this legally provided you do not exceed your daily/possession limit at any time. So you had a very successful season we'll say and now each of you, wife, kids, yourself all have a possession limit in the freezer. Well you cannot hunt that species until such time as you and your family consume some of the meat. It was a very eye opening conversation that morning at breakfast with our CO friend.

My understanding of possession limits was they only count while your out and about. That is, its the limit is for how much you can be in possession of after multiple days of hunting and once back to your permanent residence there is no limit as to how much grouse ect can be in your freezer?

Posession limits are a combination of your daily limit and any game you are in possession of at home, camp etc. If for example the regulations say you may have a possession limit of 30 ruffed grouse and your daily bag is 10 then you may harvest ten on a hunting day but if say it was the first day of the season and you had 25 in your freezer from the previous season you could not legally harvest more than 5 that first day of the new season as you have reached your possession limit when the two are combined. You may not have more than the legal possession limit at any time regardless of where you are or the game you have kept is. If you reach your possession limit and wish to continue hunting you must either give away some game or use it and you may only replace it by the amount you gave away or consumed.

Pretty sure possession includes your freezer. Never really thought about it too much because everyone in my house has a bag limit and possession limit. Hard to go over, really.

Is that just for grouse or does it apply to big game and migratory birds as well? I know here in MB you don't need a license to hunt upland birds on your own or immediate family's private property, but I've heard stories of CO's seizing meat that didn't have a license attached to it. I always assumed that for migratory birds the possession limit applies to those licensed. You can accept meat if you're not licensed yourself, but it needs to have the license number and name of the hunter on it.

Yes that applies to migratory and other game as well. I just used grouse as an example. And you are 100% correct. The license holders name and license number is supposed to accompany any meat gifted.

So if I'm an FLDS polygamist with 4 wives and 20 kids that don't hunt, we can have 25 possession limits in our freezer under my license? ( I should ask a CO this question ;) )

If the possession limit is 10 birds per day and a two days possession limit then all one is legally entitled to at their place of residence is 20 birds...
Doesnt matter if one is in the bush for three days or ten days..two days possession limit is what one is allowed.

I don't have time to read this whole thread right now, getting packed up for the Brandon gun show, leaving shortly. But, if anyone wants to give me some moose meat (haven't had any for over 10 maybe 15 yrs and I do so love it so much) I will certainly remember your birthday coming up, I know you like trout!:);)
