yes, I have heard of taping the muzzle before, you never know what could fall in there while hiking around. curious if anyone has tested accuracy with a pine needle or something poking through the brake holes?

I don't think I'd want to as that would act like a minor obstruction I think.
I second the noise. You will need to wear ear defenders when you shoot the gun, way loud. Does cut down on muzzle raise but at a cost.

My ears ring enough without the use of a muzzle-break. If you do use tape,condom or a balloon just make sure its camo or if in Ontario make it blaze orange (kidding).

Buy a new 30-06 that doesn't come with a brake. Problem solved. Then you can ask your wife for your balls back out of her purse.
I ALWAYS tape up before bush whacking.
I never used to. But I got back to camp one morning after a rough dogging, unloaded, and checked the bore and noticed an obstruction. It was a NINE INCH twig about 1/8 inch or more in diameter. It was wet and sappy and refuses to just fall out when I shook it. Stuck all the way up by the chamber. I'd always been proctective of the muzzle, but somehow it managed to get in there.
I sure am glad I didn't see a deer that morning. Don't know what would have happened. Glad I didn't find out.
Now I tape. I cut little circles of electrical tape the same width as my muzzle face, and stick them to wax paper. Just stick one on each time I go out. I've tested them numerous times at the range. No change to poi at all.

^^ This. I've taped my rifle muzzles with electrical tape in wet/snowy weather on countless occasions. Absolutely no issues. The (rapidly) escaping column of air in the barrel ahead of the bullet removes the tape well before there could be an issue. There is no effect on accuracy either. When bushwhacking, a taped muzzle is actually safer than a non-taped muzzle IMO.
I have a few clients who hunt with rifles fitted with brakes. All wrap them with tape and have no issues. One fellow did have an issue when his snow plugged brake blew off and he tapes his now. On the bright side, the replacement brake didn't cost any more than cutting and crowning a bulged barrel would have.
Only surpassed by yours. What EXACTLY is wrong with taping over the ports of a muzzle brake? The tape will prevent anything getting in to the brake or muzzle and be easily blown off by the propellant gases. Seems like a win-win to me.
Actually, in retarded Ontario brakes are required .... shooting without them causes forest fires .... LOL
Muzzle brakes don't kill flash and so would have no effect on the ability of a rifle to ignite a fire or not. To kill flash you need a flash suppressor.
I am not buying the rifle for the brake, I just happen to like the rifle that the brake is attached to. either way I learned a lot from my "stupid" question by all the great responses from other folks on here. tape it is, even without the brake. pay attention to your own balls, its too bad your wife wants nothing to do with them

A braked 30-06. Given that he couldn't figure out to tape or "tarp" his brake on his own...
The last two rifles I have bought are braked with removable brakes.
A 28 Nosler thus equipped recoils like a 243 with the brake on, without like a 338 Mag. as its just over 7 lbs.
Its twin, same weight in 35 Whelen has yet to be fired but There is no doubt in my mind that if I remove the brake it will get my attention.
