Upland Shotguns

Wm. Larkin Moore is a good place to handle guns to see what you like, and also what you don`t like. It is a premium price shop, so I find the prices high, but I am a patient shopper when it comes to good double guns. I would not miss it if I was in the area.
When I was in the market for a Spanish sxs I checked out William Larkin Moore. Their prices were such that I could fly to Spain and order the gun there for about the same money which is what I did. I don't know if the same can be said today but judging by the prices of some of their guns I'd be surprise if it weren't still the case.

The English gun that was shown looks nice but I'm wary about English guns sold outside of the UK and wouldn't touch one unless signed off by an independent gunsmith. Too often English guns have been altered, are out of proof and couldn't be sold in the UK. If I wanted a used English gun I'd go to England to buy it. Here's a good site for comparison.

If you want to handle guns, WLM is as good as any. As mentioned there is Puglisi in Duluth, there is Covey & Nye in Manchester Vt, there are quality mid and high end gun shops all over the US where one can shoulder guns and get a feel for them. But a lot of them are, as has been noted already, high priced shops. They charge for doing the work for you. And even then it doesn't always work out well.

IMHO, if you are looking beyond strictly new guns and considering the used market, I would try to get inside some of these shops and find a way to narrow down what I'm after, then talk to someone like Kirby Hoyt at Vintage Doubles or Steve Barnett at Steve Barnett Fine Guns and work with a seller who is conversant with the market yet caters to a knowledgeable crowd (i.e doesn't charge ridiculous premiums because his customers don't know any better).

Maybe you don't care about spending $9K US for a gun whose real market value is $5.5K. Maybe you do. I'm not making judgements. Walking into WLM in Scottsdale and walking out with a gun is a hell of a lot easier than doing the research to get good value. And you will likely walk out with a very nice gun. Just know you paid a significant premium for convenience.

If you walk out with a very nice gun, you must have been satisfied with the price. The amount someone is willing to pay determines what something is worth.

Seeing as you are in Ontario. What about Ellwood Epps, they have some pretty good stuff listed online, and they have access to others. O/u's will be a lot easier to find. Plenty of good ones can be had at under 3000.00. SXS's in Canada are mostly Turkish guns, including some rebrands, ie; CZ, Webley, they are in the 1000-3000 range. Merkel and Chapuis are available as well, but, they are over 3000.00. FAIR is available in Canada, Fausti and some other Italian guns, they hover around 3000. The bulk of the Spanish stuff is 4000.00 US and up. May come across used Beretta 471's and AYA #4's at gun shows in that price zone as well.

To far to drive, but I have bought a few shotguns from The Gun Dealer in NB and have always had a good experience. Google their website and check out the used gun inventory.
