I have a T/C Encore I know it's not a black rifle but I know you guys deal with short barrel rifles all the time so my question is better suited hear in the black section then the hunting section on CGN

My barrels is 14" long is in 308 what would be be my point blank range with my SBR

Looking at some info online and calculators you'll probably lose 3-400 FPS so think around 2300-ish FPS out of a 14" barrel with a 168 grain projectile.

I would seriously think about using heavier bullets as they retain their velocity a little better. The 150 grain bullets will bleed off velocity too fast and they're not really coming out any quicker.

With that said you SHOULD be able to get a maximum of about 220-ish yards without too much drop and keep you inside the PBR. (With a conservative vital size area)

This is a VERY rough and tumble estimation though, the ammo you're using and what you're hunting can make a fairly large difference in your max range without any hold over. If you're looking at anything bigger than deer, the actual velocity will play more of a part than how quickly the bullet drops.

I probably run 180 gain it's going to be my light ultralight Mountain rifle for goat and sheep
I'm going to run with peep sights 200 yards zero approximately (I will keep shots under 200 yards)
With peep sight I'm at 5.6 lbs with the 14" bull barrel

I have a 12.5" PWS MK212.

If you run a heavy bullet, it will be dropping like a rainbow - this means you have a very short practical engagement range purely because you will miss if you don't know your exact range. With regular 147gr NATO balls, the point blank range is really about 140m Lish, if you want to confine the POA within a 2MOA area.

16" is pretty much the cut off for shooting things like 17Xgr bullets, IMHO.

You should get a bullet that can go as fast as possible, using brass bullets such as those made by Barnes in the 110 to 130 gr range. Pretty much the same idea as the MK319 SOST, which they use it to shoot out of 13.5" SCAR-H. You will get a flatter trajectory and more practical range out of them than shooting heavy bullets.

Thank you For the help

I am realizing now my 308 may not be the best Choice for a SBR
Maybe I need to think about 6.8 acp II or 45-70 in 14' barrel
The idea is a ultralight SBR for big game deer/goat/sheep/moose/elk out to 200 yards
