Rechambering my k98 mauser to other Cali

If it has sentimental value keep it the way that it is. If not sell it and get a caliber you favor. You will cut the value down to a third if you try to reconstruct it. Nobody will pay much for a bastardized K98

What fiddler said. Plus re-chambering of K98s create a whole new problem of it's own.
Those feed rails and the internal magazine are meant to feed the original 8x57mm ammunition with nary a problem.
Switch to another caliber and the a proper and rightly done gunsmithing job gets much more expensive.

You can't re-chamber to anything smaller than 8mm anyway, and re-barreling would not be cost effective.
Keep it and shoot it for fun and sentimental value.

Do not touch it you are better of buying a new rifle with all that money you are going to spend on gunsmithing.
You can get a savage for around $400 -$500.

Hi I have an k98 mauser that was my grandfathers that's chambered in 8mm I can't hunt with it where I live, we can only shot up to a 270 so was thinking of building a gun what caliburs can I use

You can buy a nice commercially made rifle for far less than you would spend trying to build a rifle from that action... far less...

That's only true if it's in original condition. A lot of K98's have already been altered to one degree or another, so no harm in rebarreling. Depending on where and when it was made, it could be a very high quality action, and I'd much rather spend money rebarreling a good Mauser, than buy a new Savage Axis.

Thats possible that it has already been butchered, but only speculation. More k98s are in better/original condition than not. Regardless, it will likely cost more to reconfigure than to buy another rifle without having issues of a makeover. I wouldn't buy an Axis either, nor did I suggest it but each to their own. The point of the Savage Axis was just an example of what you can get for half the cost of reworking the rifle.

K98 is a sought after rifle. You would fetch a good price from someone who would love it in original configuration. Or trade it for another rifle mauser or other manufacture in another caliber. Would be a shame to see your granddad's rifle chopped. Someone would keep it for the prize it is.

Just lightly restamp it to 27X57 and keep using it the way it is..........most COs would never know the difference, and keep a couple 275 Rigby shells in your pocket to confuse them even worse..........;););)

Sell the gun to me OP. Ill keep it safe and original. With the money, you can buy yourself a modern gun with no history to deface.....

What kind of regulation allows a 264 Win mag and not an 8x57?

A stupid one, but it's been that way long as I can remember...

"A person hunting small game may not carry or use a rifle of greater calibre than a .275-calibre rifle, except a muzzle-loading gun, in the geographic areas of Brant, Chatham-Kent, Durham, Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton, Hamilton, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Niagara, Norfolk, Northumberland, Oxford, Peel, Perth, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington or York."

Not sure why the OP is fussed. The regulations do not apply for big game. I believe the intent was to minimize the calibers used for groundhogs. Unless the OP was planning on doing a lot of shooting of small game with the 8mm, he doesn't need to change it for deer hunting.

Just remember a 270 is actually .277. Not sure if you can use it here in s. Ontario.
Just remember that the BORE diameter of a .270W is .270!! And 'calibre' may be measured via BORE diameter or Groove diameter. The Ontario MNR are well aware of this and quite specifically chose the wording they chose. A rifle with a barrel chambered in 'calibre' .270W is good to go as it is less than a calibre of .275! The regs make no mention of bullet diameter.....nor do they specify that calibre shall be measured by 'groove' diameter
