Great news everyone! I saved a 1942 Lithgow Enfield MkIII* from the smelter! Even came with 30 rounds of old ammo.

Bad news, it's been sporterized, pretty heavily. Top wood missing, bottom wood carved, barrel band, original front sight missing, Stripper clip guides gone, rear sight blinder's gone, HDF glued in layers as a recoil pad... /sigh.

Now I'm not sure if the barrel has been cut so I could use some info as to the original specs of these rifles, and my google-fu appears to be pretty weak with regards to this. Also, if anyone knows of a good place to look for parts and would be willing to point me in that direction it would be appreciated (of course there's the EE, I've been looking already). As soon as I have a bit more info on these rifles I think I'm going to try and bring it back as close to original as possible. It might not be a collector, but I'm hoping it will be a shooter.

25 1/4". Scrub the bore thoroughly before you spend any money on it. If the bore is bad, the action might be a good candidate for conversion to .45ACP, etc.

I honestly would leave it as is or find a better condition sporter to restore. The missing charger bridge would make me look the other way

Yeah, I haven't cleaned it up yet to see exactly what I had to work with, I more wanted to know what I was working with first. I think I'll start on it tonight, thanks for the info.

At free.99 I wasn't too worried about it's worth and wanted to save it from the smelter, no functioning rifle deserves that fate. I was more interested in the Cooey Model 60 that came with it, also at free.99.

Once the metal is cut its not worth restoring. Usually the barrel is cut short so you have it original. Never heard of the clip guides cut off so it is really not worth restoring.

Good on you for the rescue. If I was you I would keep going with the sporterized gun. I would put the monte carlo stock and scope on it. Its already ruined

If you are bent on restring then I found most of my parts on ebay. I bought some out the wood from numrich.

Nothing looks like it's been cut off, just removed. But you may be correct, it might be better to clean it up and leave it as a sporter. I'll have a better idea after I strip it, clean it and measure it. May even get some pictures up.

Or break it down into parts and sell the parts. Buy an Enfield of your choice with the money (probably have to add some money though).

If u haven't got metal parts ur best bet is to look up sarco in the US they have complete part kits for the no 1 mk 3 for around $48 us // I would check and clean up bore first as long as rifling is good it should b ok //I hears fellers talk about headspace on these rifles these r battle rifles and meant to take a beating headspace is a little more leanent after all look at the conditions these were use in mud/ filt and God know what else got into these actions// my 2 cents worth
