Lets See your Custom 700 or model seven

Posted here before, but...

Early '70s 700 BDL 25.06 Varminter.

Went with HS Precision stock with aluminum bedding block. Drop in fit as per advertised. However, recommend bedding the recoil lug, it allows for a tad bit of play. Found that, when setting the action into place, have to keep it in rearmost position when tightening the action screws. There's a very slight, even hard to see, groove cut to clear the bolt release rod that has to line up or it won't work. So be sure to bed the lug in right position so that bolt release works. Maybe newer versions have tightened this up, don't know. But it is an excellent stock. They make a lightweight rifle, and that version of the stock most likely is appropriately trimmed down for weight. Mine is a bull barrel version, so weight not an issue.

IMHO, bottom metal on Remintons are basically junk...and I think more than a few gunsmiths/makers would agree. I replaced mine with a Williams, actually made specifically for HS stock. Required very minimal fitting. But what a difference in quality! No comparison whatsoever! Was the perfect finishing touch for the project. Side note: whenever replacing a trigger or bottom metal, or both, make sure the trigger clears the trigger guard! Something I didn't pay enough attention to. Had to grind the bottom of the trigger a tad on this one, it was hanging up, which can cause a disconcerting discharge event when closing the bolt!

Martini Gunmakers did a reblue, along with target crown. Shotpeened, lightly, for a very nice and durable matte finish.

Early on with the rifle I had the trigger replaced with a Timney, had a very alarming experience with discharge on release of the safety. Shilen makes an excellent trigger, also.

I use nothing but Burris Signature rings on my rifles, for a variety of reasons, mostly to automatically correct alignment and protect my scopes from ghastly ring marks and being crushed or bent. (I worked in a sports shop for a while, you wouldn't believe how common these issues are!) Lapping rings is yesterday stuff, far as I'm concerned. On this one I went with Leupold's Weaver style steel bases for quality, and because dovetail bases/rings present their own potential problems with torquing scope tubes, albeit Burris dovetail rings can, if properly installed, prevent this, too. ( ...and I don't even want to get started on Weaver detachable rings! Aaaargh!!! )

It has a Leupold VX-II 6-18x40 AO, fairly satisfied with it, price was right at the time, too.

It shoots pretty good! :)

Build it "on" the action like this one.
Late 70's action, Shilen #2, 9" twist @ 23" in 280 AI.
All Nitroned flat black.
McMillan Mountain Rifle Edge stock. Rifle Basix trigger.
3.5-10X Leupold in Talley LW's.
7 lbs. 2 ounces.

I keep asking myself why I need anything else..........

Mine will go as follows:

Remington 700 action SA chambered in 7mm-08

JC Custom barrels 22" #2 contour modified (considering a 23" barrel not sure yet)

Wildcat Composite Remington model 7 classic stock

PT&G speedlock aluminum firing pin and reduced spring

PT&G aluminum bolt shroud

Trigger Tech Rem 700 Primary

Leupold FX II 4x33

Rings and bases I am unsure yet if I am going with Talley 1" rings and bases or weaver, Just waiting to hear from weaver on weight of each.

Will be adding a flip flop recoil pad to keep weight to a minimum.
