I've been using H-4831 for my 300 win mag with 165 gr Hornady A-Max and GMX bullets , since I started reloading. I'm considering a heavier bullet, most likely 200 gr and I'm wondering if you have any ideas on powder for this caliber, bullet weight combo. What do you recommend.

As skid said RL 22 is a great 300 Win mag powder as is imr 7828. This is what I use in mine with 200 gr bullets. A max load gets me appx 2900 ft/sec.

I have been using H4831 for about 50 years now. My hunting friend also uses it in his 7mm Remington Mag. It is the old reliable powder for those big cases. That said especially for the 200 grain bullet there probably are better powders for your 300 WM. I would stick with a Hogdon Extreme powder for the temperature insensitivity. But, you can go slower in burn rate. H1000 would give you a step up in velocity on both the 165 and 200 grain bullets. And for the 200 grain, Retumbo would give you even a touch more than H1000. See the Hogdon Load Data site for min max load data.

Thanks juys. H1000 and Retumbo are the two that I was considering, but I'm not locked in yet, so to speak, same with H4831, I haven't had any problems with that other then it's a bit dirty and that's just a bit more cleaning. Just want to know what others are using and how they find it. I'm open to any and all input. So please keep your opinions coming. Advice from people who know allot more then me is always welcome. I've only been reloading for about 5 years.
Gotta add that I'm definitely uping bullet weight from 165s to 200 gr.

Try the 200 with 4831. I use 70 gr of 4831SC for about 3,000 fps. If it groups well for you, stop thinking about another powder. No other powder would give significantly higher velocity.

If 4831 groups well, you are done. If it does not work, I would try RL22. I find it cleaner.

Makes sence, the only reason I'm considering another powder is because of the H4831 leaves alot of mess behind which takes a bit more elbow grease, plus getting the carbon off the case necks in a pain.

Carbon on the outside of your case neck can be a sign your brass needs annealing.

If you can find it, another very good candidate for those 200's is Norma MRP. I reach 3000 and pennies in 2 different 308 Norma Magnums,
the ballistic twin to the 300 Win Mag. I have also used Reloder 26 to get similar performance. Dave.

There are a few good powders, but some of the standby's are IMR 7828, IMR 4350, H4831 and H1000, of coarse there are others but try these first.
200 grain bullets I would say Sierra 200 SBT or Accubonds.
