I like the 6.5x284 in the short action. I had one for about 30 years on a 600 action. People are going to jump all over me and say you need the long action to seat out the trendy long, heavy streamlined bullets . Mine was a sub 5# hunting rifle and it worked great with 125 and 140 partitions. The 130 accubond was a good bullet. For a compact hunting rifle I prefer the short action. I didn't load it to the nuts but easily reached 3000 with the 140 partitions.
Failing that build anything on the 284 case. You can get thecae capacity of a 30-06 or a 350 RM,
Build what turns your crank.I might even have something that I would take an action as a partial trade.

Sooo.... A stainless, light weight 300 Savage in a Wildcat stock? Way cooler than a 308 win :)

Way. :runaway:

Not sold on the Wildcat just yet. I like the finished product but I lack the skills to finish it and have been quoted some high dollars for the finished product.

I'm pretty set on the .260 for my medium 6.5. I have the 6mm bore covered off as well. These would be the only two bore diameters that I would look at with the 284 case so not really on my radar at this point.

Barrels that I have on hand-

2 x 6mm sporters (Gaillard, Shilen)
1 x .264 sporter fluted (Benchmark)
1 x .257 sporter (Shilen)

None of these would work for a lightweight build IMO. I plan on at least one semi-lightweight rifle out of the 3 projects so it looks like a new barrel is in order.

Really depends on what you already have one hand and what you plan on hunting and where.

A 250Savage, 7mm-08, 358Winchester would be a good trio. I have a 257Rob, 280 and a 35Whelen so sort of along the same line of thought.

I've got .243/.308/.358;

Also .257/7X57/7.62X57;

I think a .260/.308/.358 would make a nice set... with the .260 being and ultralight (ish).

250 savage
338 fed
358 win with a 16" barrel

I had a .338 Fed and M77 Frontier .358 Win at the same time... short barrel or no, it was just too much duplication... I sold both and settled on the .358 Win in the above M77 Carbine.

A 250Savage, 7mm-08, 358Winchester would be a good trio.

This is close to my way of thinking. Only thing is I may trade the 250 for a 22-250 or 243.

I didn't even thing they made short action stainless lefties. I knew the long action stainless versions were not common, but short action - those are indeed unicorns. Congrats on the find.
