I have read casual comments about this before, just want to get you guys' expert knowledge to enhance my understanding. I witnessed first hand in multiple occasions the MFS 223 ammo causing sparks out of the muzzle, not muzzle flash but distinctive sparks. I know that they are bi-metal jacket, composed of different material. Obviously will behave slightly differently from copper.

My questions:
  • What exactly in the bi-metal jacket causes the sparking? And how? It seems to happen with both chrome-lined and non-chrome-lined barrels alike.
  • Can POI be affected quite a bit between copper and bi-metal jacketed ammo? I know different projectile weight, seating depth and powder charges etc will shoot differently, I am wondering if all things being equal would the bi-metal jacket alone cause significant impact to POI.

What I am NOT trying to start a debate on:
  • Crappy ammo blah blah, 3rd world this and that, buy American only, etc.
  • "If this will kill your barrel debate". I already know if you blast rapid fire for a 1000 round with barrel glowing red, bi-metal will cause more wear than copper.

Any info on why MFS is prone to unburned powder?
I have tried a dozen other brands both NATO and SAAMI specs plus my own hand loads without such sparks.

I have shot a bunch of MFS 223/5.56 and did not notice excessive muzzle flash/sparks out of an 18" barrel. Most of my shooting with that round has been done in daylight/full sun.

Unlike their 308/7.62 ammo, which out of my 16" rifle would produce a BLINDING muzzle flash, even in broad daylight. I've never seen any other ammo product that kind of a flash, save for a short barrel Mosin.

It never ceases to amaze me that the Russians don't use a ball powder in loading this for ease of loading and cost, etc.
AFAIK only perm makes ball powder, kazan and tambov are extruded. All the plants are woefully under capitalized. Kazan may see an upgrade in the future

FWIW MFS is Barnaul.
