Best stripped lower for first build

If you wait a week or so Saskatoon Gun Works will have aero restocked. They give you a deal on an upper if you buy a lower. They're probably one of the best, very strong aluminum.

This is my suggestion. Pretty much all quality forged lowers are the same... Aero are good quality and these are an excellent price.

I just built an NEA lower last night, no issues at all.

Which means you likely haven't shot it, which means your statement has little value. Having all the parts fit in the lower is half the battle, the other half is whether or not it works...

I agree it is of fine quality however IMO not true mil-spec with the added gimmicky modifications.

I'd disagree with the modifications being "gimmicky". Screwing on all the extra crap people do to make lowers ambi instead of just buying an ambi lower is gimmicky IMO.

Hi all,

Just wanted to follow up saying that I took everyone's advice and went with the Aero Precision lower from Saskatoon Gun Works. Although I do prefer the appearance of the NEA lower, I feel much more confident purchasing the Aero in having a successful build.. Now to sell that Norc AR to pay for some parts.. Hmm..

I know someone interested in the CQA.. PM me?

I didn't have nay issues with my NEA lower.

If I were buying today though I'd be picking up a Colt Canada stripped though. Hard to argue with them for the price point.

So I completed my lower build with the Aero receiver.

Aero stripped lower
Aero extension tube mil spec
ALG parts kit
ALG QMS trigger
Magpul MOE grip
Magpul CTR stock

Was fairly easy and fun aside from searching for a flying spring for an hour.

I am having an issue with the stock getting stuck on the protuding buffertube threads when fully collapsed. I'm guessing either turning the last few threads on a lathe or dremiling the end of the stock would be a fix?

What is the best option for an upper? Build vs buy?

Do not Dremel or cut any threads because mil spec pieces from reputable manufacturers like Aero will just piece together. CTR stocks have the provision for adding or removing a buttpad spacer to aid in adjusting for proper travel.

Pictures can help members here suggest solutions. Just don't cut.

Or YouTube it.

I've built "several" AR lowers with much lower quality parts than you have, and I've never seen that issue. No cutting is ever required on an AR lower - even with sh^t parts. Post pics, we'll help.

Included pictures. The inner diameter of the stock is smaller than the outer diameter of the threads on the tube. The tube lock also does a poor job of indexing the tube, I'm not sure if this is normal or not.

There is no spacer present behind the butt stock, both the tube and butt stock are both milspec. With both parts being milspec I would assume that I would be able to use all stock positions.

It appears you have a poorly finished mil-spec tube which did not have the threads milled down. It's obvious that you know that but the symptoms you are experiencing are usually reserved for lower tier companies like ATI. I have seen owners use thicker cut to fit two way tape on the end of the tube to impede the travel to keep it from jamming.

AR15.com has a few posters who have experienced the identical issues but some so severe the owner can not pull the stock off of the threads at all.

Personally I would change to another tube manufacturer which has the exposed threads properly milled. The attachment illustrates a properly finished mil-spec tube.
