Looking to refinish a bolt action gun in something tough and weather resistant like SS.

What is the best finish looks close and tough as stainless steel?

I know armacoat had a stainless colour listed last time I looked. I'm sure cerakote has a similar colour options well. Either would serve you well

Thanks Gentlemen for your input.

Can any of these finish apply to the bore as well and what's the difference between hard chrome and nickel plating?

Any of these finishes or plating processes add thickness to the metal. So you can't use them in the bore without affecting the bore size. The coatings are thicker than something like hard chrome and would not withstand the high pressures for long anyway. So that leaves plating. And to chrome plate or use some other plating that would protect the steel would require starting out with a bore and rifling that is over size to leave room for the plating and final sizing operations. So having an existing bore done is really financially out of the question.

Really if you're this concerned about it all there is only one answer. Sell or retire what you have and buy a stainless rifle. Just keep in mind that "stainless" isn't really rust proof. Even stainless still needs a little oil. There are only a very few stainless alloys that are fully rust proof. Most of the stainless alloys that work for guns are only rust resistant. So you still need to oil the metal from time to time and treat it properly after a day of dragging it through some wet forest.

Thanks CanAm please explain more what is melonite and approximate cost on doing it.
melonite, tenifer etc is a case hardneing process used by most pistol manufacturers to protect their guns. glock, SW, etc. It is very cheap in batch, not sure as a 1 off. nitrera in surrey does it . you can also use gas nitriding

it is very very cheap. $4 a pound roughly

Thanks CanAm for the info! I sent Nitrera an e-mail inquiring about having this done. If and when I get a response I'll make sure I update this thread with what I find out just in case anyone is interested.

It's quite possible they will not want to bother with small quantities/low volumes but it can't hurt to ask.

The liquid nitride process sounds perfect for what I want regarding weatherproofing. At a minimum I'd probably have my CZ 527 and CZ 455 done. I have long wanted a good all weather bolt action 7.62x39 with iron sights, so I often mull around the idea of having my savage axis .308 SS re-barreled and modified to run 7.62x39; a project that would probably run north of $1K, never mind the substantial hurdle finding a gunsmith willing to participate in said endeavor. Having my CZ 527 weatherproofed would put this idea to rest.

I sent Nitrera a message a week ago and have not had a response, so I will take it that they are not interested. I will see if there are any other companies in Canada doing this and if so I'll try my luck with them. If anyone has any further leads or suggestions of where I can have this done I'd welcome the input!

At the risk of telling you something that you know already...if weatherproofing your firearms to protect against rain....you would want to use synthetic stock material only. It is very hard to fully protect a wood stock from swelling in severe wet conditions. ...

I'm very pleased to say that Nitrea has now contacted me and I am having a quote put together for a couple of rifles and some other components. I'll update the thread as I go in case others are interested to hear more about this.
