Challenger shot shells opinions please.

I went through probably 5 flats this summer, and except one shell, had no issues. I try to buy them from AmmoSupply whenever they go on sale (often for about $65/flat)

Never had any issues with them and I've shot several flats of each type of target shells in 12g. The Extra Light don't cycle semi-autos well but that's to be expected. My guns LOVE the handicap #8 shot.

For pricing, you didn't say what sort of deal but I regularly pick them up on sale for about $60 a flat plus tax. Gotta love the price on them!
$74/case 250.

For the unknowing, can you please explain the issues with Cheddite?
Some could think it's a cheese spread, and wonder why it's used in primers.

R.

Some guns have an issue piercing the primers when Cheddites are used. They are slightly softer than other primers on the market, but are cheaper than their peers. If you have no piercing issue, then you have no issues.

They are a brand of primer. 4 of my 5 shotguns have no trouble with Cheddites, but my 5th pierces every time. Pierced primers are hard on the action and firing pin. So for that 5th gun I only shoot non-cheddite rounds.

Thanks,
Cal.

No thanks. Cheddite primers. Enough said!

Not sure that it is just the Cheddite primers .....May have something to do with pressures.......My o/u pierces the Challenger primers but when I reload with Cheddite primers in STS hulls I do not get pierced primers.

Hmm... This differs from my experience. Reloaded or not Cheddites are a no-go for one of my guns.

Thanks,
Cal.

Cheddite has never corrected the issue of their primers being pierced after 20+ years and the problem is ongoing. I have never once had a Fed/Win/Rem 209 primer fail. Cheddites are brittle and known for fracturing or puncturing however you prefer to refer to it. They will with continued use ruin your firing pins and elongate your firing pin holes weakening your breech face in the process. I don't knowingly shoot anything that runs Cheddite primers.

I have had no issues with them. I use challengers for ptarmigan, grouse and rabbits because they pattern well and the price is right.

I am no expert on primers, but I will share my own experience.

I have reloaded and fired tens of thousands (30-40k?) of rounds of 12 ga shotshells and have used only cheddite primers.

Every shell has been fired out of the same trap gun. I have had only 1 FTF, and the firing pins and holes on my gun (beretta O/U) are just fine. Not once have I had a pierced or damaged primer.

A couple of guys at the club have complained about firing pins piercing cheddite primers, but I would put the blame on their gun and firing pin spring strength vs the primer.

I Shoot multiple guns using Challenger shells and reload with Cheddite primers (both red & black) -- never had a pierced primer in my Fabarm, Browning 725, Benelli Cordoba (my go to clays guns). Have seen it happen to others mostly Browning Cinergy's and Krieghoff's. Usually the lower barrel. I always considered that the gun was at fault because it didn't happen in all gun brands.

There are many reasons to choose one ammo over another. Small-minded bigotry toward Quebec isn't one of them.

Just because I choose not to support a businees from a province that prevents out of province trades from working their, that send out the language cops to stop the use of the english language, and a province that depends on the taxes from outside to keep them going, I am a bigot.Wow.
