SIG Broken Frame

From the book; “ Gun Digest Book of the SIG SAUER “ 2ed by Massad Ayoob, 2014, page 243.

“ The SIG armorer’s manual even makes a point of stating in caps,

“SPECIAL ATTENTION MUST BE GIVEN TO CLEANING THE EXTRACTOR “.

“ Particularly if you have an older model 9mm and have been shooting a lot of hot ammo in it, check the frame very carefully. If the frame is going to crack, I’ve seen it most commonly on the left side toward the front, right along the slide rails”.

On page 39 he mentions that the US Navy SEALS adopted the SIG after the Beretta 92s broke repeatedly.

In the book, “ Modern Beretta Firearms “, by Gangarosa, Gene,
He mentions the switch from Beretta 92s to the SIG. He also mentions the SEALS were using SIGs before they switched to M92s, as they were having from problems. He also mentioned that the SEALS were using 9mm +P+ ammunition in their pistols.

It would seem the SEALS went from SIG; to Beretta 92; to SIG; again and the problem is ammunition ?

In the old magazine articles after WW2 there used to be mention of damaging pistols by using submachine gun ammunition in them.

Beretta did fix the problem with the M92s.

It would seen that the Norinco NP22 would have the same problems as the SIG.

The Norinco NP22 is made with a steel frame and called the HP77B.

The Zastava CZ999 and the Chinese Scorpion CF98, SIG copies are also mention in the article.

...and to clean the extractor properly you have to remove the breechblock, which (according to the armorers manual) requires you to replace the pin that secures it to the slide, which requires you to get a pin from somewhere. I'm going through this right now, no one in Canada seems to have them in stock and, if they do, they seem to be only available in a $35 spare parts kit.

Note to self... Order several spare roll pins on my next Brownells order.

Edit: Well this sucks. Brownells won't ship Sig parts out of the US.

My original SIG 226 had the frame rails fracture exactally as stated. Had over 3000 rounds through it when shooting IPSC. Got a replacement no problem, but that was 25 years ago.

To put this in perspective, the article points to the most likely failure points not the relative lifespan of the guns. A P226 typically outlasts a 92FS by a pretty large margin. Also the P226 will continue to function with a broken frame rail, the 92FS stops suddenly if the slide or locking insert fail.

Also if you contact our gunsmith at gunsmith@theshootingcentre.com we can help you with slide roll pins

Sounds good. Brownells wants $9 for the inner and $9 for the outer. As far as I can tell that's for one pin rather a packet of some reasonable number. $24 CAD for one pin.

The OEM parts are pricey. They are just roll pins though, so if you take them to a fastener store you can likely by a box of 100 for less than the OEM price.

Note note to self, Google Spae Naur in Kitchener Ontario. Roll pins and lots of other hardware that every hairy man can use.
