I think it's it's important to own a variety of handguns which would likely include;

  • M1911 - where it all began
  • M1911A1 - to show people what an A1 actually looks like
  • 1911 45ACP DW Valor
  • 1911 45aCP STI (high end) Sentinel Premier?
  • 1911 45ACP Ed Brown 5"
  • 1911 45ACP Les Baer 5"

I have to take exception with this one maybe from a different perspective. One of my greatest pleasures with handguns is sharing them with others. I love shooting them but there is a special pleasure in watching someone try the M1911 - knowing it's over 100 years old and has stories to tell. That one is as much for others as for me. Heck, someday, I might even buy a Glock just to show others why I like 1911s. :p

Why? Well, they both shoot a .22 pellet at about 490 fps out the barrel. Simply put, its the closest you will get in Canada to legally being able to shoot a pistol in the bush or rural backyard. Both are accurate and good for target shooting cans or even hunting small game.

In a sense, its the ONLY quintessential Canadian pistol as it is the only one that can legally serve an actual legal purpose in the current system. You can get crazy with them and order a higher quality one from their website with a better trigger, grips, sights etc... I never did that, but considered it, I ended up just buying the standard one from Canadian tire on sale, and I have had more fun with it than any other pistol I have... just bc I can use it camping, at the family cottage, and mini range in the basement.

Turn loose the wallet and get an Antique.
 
Of the modern firearms in general use to day I would go with:

1. 1911 in 45acp - Base GI Version to Dlask/Nighthawk or Wilson Combat
2. CZ 75B 9MM - the SP-01 series, the 85 Combat are all just iterations of the basic 75B
3. Sig 226 9MM - any variation
4. Beretta 92FS - or any of the iterations of the gun including the Girsan copies.
5. Browning Challenger/Medalist .22LR - Buckmark is the latest in the series of essentially the same gun
6. S&W M&P FS/Glock 17 9MM - both are reliable, last forever if cared for and are relatively inexpensive
7. Model 10 S&W 5" 38spl
8. Ruger GP-100 4.2" .357Mag
9. Ruger Blackhawk 45Colt (Convertible if you can find one)
10. Uberti SAA 45 Colt 4.75" - the Colt made SAA are way to expensive for what you can get for a third of the price.

If you have those guns you need to look no further. You will add to your list but you won't be improving your choices for 99% of what you can do with a handgun. IMHO I completed my list yesterday. I buy no more.....you have what for sale :>)
