The ultimate goal at the bottom of this post is to find someone who could similarly modify and coat my stock:
Picked up a Howa mini action, 223 with 22" regular (#2 contour). First impressions are, slick little action, great trigger, mag release is in a dumb spot, but seems like a quality piece, minus the hogue stock.
I could only find a Remington long action weaver base, so I cut it into a front and rear base and painted it flat black. Took the Leupold mark AR firedot scope off my crossbow and mounted it up in the Excalibur rings. Height is perfect. Managed to get a few rounds through it. Federal 62gr Fusion was 2" low and 100 yards and I was out of travel on my scope. Tried some nosler 40gr trophy grade varmint and they hit 8" higher. Need some more bullet weights to see which was the anomaly. The 62gr were just over 1" group, the 40gr was just under. I want to see how it shoots with 53gr superformance...
My gun:
The gun weighs 7lbs 2 ounces without the bipod, the factory stock weighs 36 ounces (2lbs 4 ounces!). The McMillan hunters edge on my tikka superlite 22-250 weighs 23 ounces, which is 3/4 lb less. A $1000 McMillan seems a little overkill on a lower budget rifle, but if one was handy I'd probably buy it. In my quest to find a new, lighter stock, which doesn't look readily available, I came across the pictures below on varminter.com of a stock that was modified. The plastic is very thick on the sides and was reprofiled and painted for a weight savings of about 7 ounces, and a nicer, more slender stock.
Before and after pics of the gun (not mine, borrowed from varminter.com screen shots):
I'm interested in doing similar to my rifle, I can sand, but I'm not very artistic. Does anyone know where I could get this done?
If I could get this in my hunters edge, it would be 5lbs 10 ounces with the scope and mounts!
