So, did I miss the boat on K98's?

I'm just about satisfied with my Russian milsurp binge, and am slowly working my way west. Other than the EE, are there any retailers selling decent collectible German K98's, or am I SOL? BC local would be ideal, but I definitely wouldn't object to reputable dealers out of province or board sponsors.

Hi,

Are you looking for original numbers matching examples or are you okay with re-furbished examples, such as those captured and refurbished by the Russians? The later is still somewhat easy to find.

-Steve

Collectible? As in all original, numbers matching, clean with clean bore? You'll pay heavily for those features...and there is no dealer selling such.

You have to look hard for them like other Mauser collectors do.

As for RC guns...go to Crappy Tire and pick the best mismatch you can find.

I would agree with that, although I havent seen one at a retailer in a long time. I think the wholesalers/importers just find the odd one here and there and make them available.

I've got a few that I'm contemplating selling............but really not very motivated to do so.

Most Canadian Tire stores here in southern Ontario have them, some are in pretty good condition. They're over $700 plus tax.

I would probably be ecstatic with an RC k98 with waffenamts intact to start, working my way up to an all matching mint condition. What's a reasonable expectation for price range for an RC with visible dirty birds?

So if I were to start looking around, will I need to keep my eyes peeled and turn over every rock, or are there some retailers that might sell the odd few here and there? Also what kind of dollars do the rarer ones fetch?

I just signed up on K98forums.com but haven't had much time to do any research yet. Are there different factories that offer better/rarer versions of the K98?

Like the OP said, the retailers will be asking 700 or so for an RC. You should be able to get one in the 600$-700 (all in) range on the EE. Its debatable, but Russian captures are typically all worth about the same regardless of code. Matching guns? The sky is the limit, but generally $1200-3000. Too many rare codes and variations to list here, some guys have dedicated their lives to studying these things and still have lots to learn.

I should mention PS Militaria does them have in. Hard to judge, sight unseen, I would just call him up and ask for the nicest one and you'll certainly get a very fair deal at 695 plus tax/ shipping.

I know this doesn't help you now, but I remember seeing a gorgeous RC in a CT somewhere in northern Alberta a year or two ago. It was $600 IIRC. I should have scooped it. Keep looking. There are still some nice rifles available, but they aren't stacked up at the local Co-op like they were years ago. I managed to round up a Mexican M54 Mauser from a private collection. Not a K98, but uncommon, to say the least.

So I've been poking around a bit and apart from bullseye and ps militaria there don't seem to be too many kicking around (lol).

Any lower mainlanders see any at local CT? I've called the half dozen or so that I know have carried milsurps and none of them seem to know what I'm talking about f:P:

Yup, popped into WSS and Cabelas right after Christmas, and was in Lever Arms just before. Although I know Lever rotates their stock fairly regularly so I should follow up with them again to see if they've found some.

Haha perfect! Been meaning to head out that way for some snowy sightseeing. Thanks guys!! I'm sure they'll be as good as Lever's $1200 RC K98 :kickInTheNuts:

I bought a K98 at the leduc crappy tire last october and it was $799. It was the last one they had and i was lucky as the dirty birds were still intact. The stock was a flaking mess though but some blo fixed it right up nice!
