Hey guys, there's a nice AR15 on CanAm but it doesn't have a removable carry handle. I'm thinking if i buy that rifle and get a blank upper receiver, can i swap all the parts (incl the barrel) to the new receiver and have a removable carry handle? Thanks for helping them AR noobs :D

Wrong forum, you want the Black and Green Rifles Forum

And yes you should be able to, I was able to swap out piles of small parts on mine without difficulty. However, some parts might be ever so slightly out of spec. Biggest thing would be to make sure your new upper can mate with the old lower.

Or you can call Lever Arms. They have a 20" Norc with flat top

I wonder if not all of the dominion internals are milspec. I know certain chinese firearms although they look the same to the us guns they're mimicking are off just ever so slightly. Lots of people report this type of issue with norincos etc.

Maybe someone has some experience andnwould like to share

The only issues I had with mine was aftermarket hand guards were a way tighter fit on a Norc, the FSB was pretty hard to get off, and on the carbines, the receiver extension and butt stock are com-spec, not mil. Everything else fit.

I didn't see a flat top 20" on Can Am's website for $8 more, got a link?

Can Am's 20" for $599:

Lever Arm's 20" for $699:

Also note that the lever Arms 20" with the removable carry handle has the heavier .750" A2 barrel and the Canada ammo has the fixed carry handle because it is A1 spec and has a 20" .625 "pencil" barrel. Just in case the Op did not know.

I apologize I mean non removable carry handle and not "upper". Edited my mistake Cheers!

Woops lol true. As others have said in this thread, I would personally also get the Lever Arms rifle for the detachable carrying handle unless you are more interested in the pencil barrel and the full stock. It would be cheaper than getting an extra upper receiver and a new carrying handle and switching the parts over.

I don't know if I agree. DA is $100 cheaper to begin with. Lots of guys are looking for retro parts and would eagerly buy the upper for close to if not more than what a cheap flat top would cost. I have a USGI spare parts contract upper and wouldn't be surprised if the Norc was nicer. This thing is rough. Flash was not removed evenly or with cosmetics in mind.

I prefer lightweights myself but that may not matter to the OP.

Swapping the DA parts specifically the barrel to a milspec AR upper receiver is a bad idea. The diameter of the index pin is significantly smaller on the DA barrel than milspec and the diameter of where the barrel mates to the receiver is different. Other small parts such as the rear sight, the mag latch, the selector have different dimensions than milspec. Mind you the rifles are a great value, but a lot of parts aren't the same size as milspec parts.

I don't know if the 20" barrels are made the same but, for reference, here is one of CanAm's 14.5" DA pencil barrels on an Aero upper:
