So the first week of February happens to be my birthday. Last year at this same time I purchased a GSG 1911 .22 and have been using that to learn with. Now I'm ready to move up to a 9mm with the intentions of putting a few thousand rounds through the pig, obtaining my BB by summer and moving towards Production Minor in IPSC. Hovering around the $1000 mark so my choices have been Glock 17 Gen4, HK SFP9 and lots of raving about the CZ Shadow. Looking for your input and experiences with these guns. Learning to work with the larger recoil will probably be my biggest hurdle. I imagine the Glock will have the largest recoil being the lightest. I enjoy the challenge though and learning to shoot better with more recoil will help me when I'm ready to move up to .40 or .45. I don't want to get the Shadow purely based on the fact that it may help me shoot more accurately and faster, although that'll be a bonus.

Thanks for your input.

There is a reason that it seems like 90+ % of Production shooters in Canada shoot a Shadow. Myself and a couple of buddies were in your shoes a few years ago, I went straight to the CZ and they went other directions, we all now shoot CZ in Production.

For $1K - no brainer, get a Shadow, a decent holster and practise the f^&% out of your draw and DA first shot. Once you get that working for you, the rest will come easily.

An experienced ipsc shooter said to me during my provisional "if you're going to compete, buy an open division gun and stick with it. Why? You'll eventually get there anyway. So you might as well start now. You'll save more money in the end."

Sounds to me you're going to end up in major anyway, so you might as well buy a major now.

If you're like me who truly wants to stay in production, then that's fine too. I love my glocks, and it's the first pistol i recommend to new buyers. However, there are a ton of reasons why serious competitors run with a cz or tanfoglio in production.

Cz shadow it's what I went with. Extremely happy with mine, but it was a Cz custom shop gun. I placed first in production Inmy first match with the shadow, by over 280 points. They arent kidding when they say the shadows like cheating. First stage of the day I had all alphas other than the steel I missed.

Yep....another get the shadow vote....we all have our favourites..I have bought and traded many pistols ...some I've loved, some not so much...but the shadow remains top of my collection on the never sell list...there are a few good deals to be found if your patient..New or on 'ee' ...they really are that good ..and very confidence building...do it and don't look back..jmho.

My multi-year plan consists of purchasing a 9mm this year. Larger calibers will be 1-2 years down the road. I have a work from the ground up kind of attitude. Shadow 2 will be my choice, just hopefully I can remain patient for a vendor to get some stock :d

I was just about to post a few retailers that I saw had stock just a week ago but I figured I'd verify they had stock and sure enough, they were all sold out 'cept for Crafm (urban gray) and DO! WOW!

And free shipping too from DurhamOutdoors! They'll be out hunting from Jan 7-14th so no orders will be processed during that time, just FYI.

Sometimes i read these posts and wonder to myself. What do you mean once you can move up to 40 and 45? The only reason you'd choose those calibres if for very specific scoring purposes. Shooting them or 9mm is pretty much exactly the same, grip the gun, squeeze the trigger and don't disturb your sights/sight picture.

I intend to buy .40 and .45 caliber handguns for my own personal desire, not specifically for competing. The 9mm I wanted first, so figured I would use that as my entry into IPSC.

I'm working in SK until the first week of February so I probably won't purchase it until after Jan.14 anyways. Thanks for the links though, got several suppliers on my list getting stock soon.

Buy whatever you want to learn.

If your competitive you'll upgrade VERY quick.
If not, you'll love what you have and do.

I went from a p07 to shadow in two matches.
I shot well, but the short light pistol was a huge hindrance.

Buy what you love, not what you need.
Youll enjoy shooting more and will do it way more.

If you buy a Shadow II you'll have the same pistol as the top competitors in the country (I don't think many guys in the top 10 in production use anything but a Shadow... There might be a Stock II and and Excalibur in there, but the bulk are Shadows). You will never be in the position of "equipment deficit" and you will never be able to say "if I had a ###X, then I'd be more competitive".

The gear is important, but the mindset is more so. The cost to acquire the top-tier pistol is not dramatically more than any other pistol under consideration (and insignificant compared to the cost of ammunition or travel).

Why not get the best and remove any doubt? If IPSC isn't for you, you can always sell it. You'll get a better resale - and likely move it quicker - on a Shadow II than on an IWI Jericho or something similar.
